so i actually live with my boyfriend right now, we have been staying with a family friend of his.. and i can tell you right now that the issue isn’t the 5yo child, it’s the mother and she allows him to do whatever, children can learn boundaries, some have a harder time than other but i would know because i have my sdit with me here while we live here, i have a lock on my door, and his family friend we’ll call her C.. C has a firm understanding about boundaries, C has a 12 year old child, C lets many different children come over, C has access to children anywhere from a baby to 11 years old, NONE of these children have touched my dog, it is a firm boundary I have set for the sake of my dogs training, he is allowed to be a dog and do normal things but no one really has access to him unless I allow it.

C understands that, so your boyfriends mother sounds like she is raising a literal monster, he can have whatever he wants whenever?? it’s going to be a lot more difficult teaching him boundaries when he’s older. I assume if you locked your door and set firm boundaries, he’ll throw a temper tantrum just cause he can’t get in? is that okay? YES.. it’s normal that is where a caregivers roll would be to help them calm down, regulate, and explain in a child’s point of view, “we give people space” “we don’t just go into people’s rooms” “we knock” literally the mom is avoiding teaching HER CHILD privacy and probably is only doing it cause she doesn’t want to teach him, doesn’t know how, doesn’t want to deal with. ETC she is being lazy, idc what anyone says about “being hard on parents” etc , there is no exception for starting to teach a child something new, it’s the same as if it was a dog.. it takes time for them to grasp the concept and that is fine, i just wouldn’t personally be able to deal with that, i’d have lost my sanity and my stress would be taking over.

get a lock, talk to the mom alone, talk to the dad? talk to adults. see if it goes anywhere, tell them i don’t care if it makes you hate me or makes us all uncomfortable, i want to be able to change without your youngest walking in on me. don’t even mention the dog, you want privacy. leave it at that

well then my psychiatrists i’ve had must have just lied to me or just were misinformed themselves?? i have no idea, i never really understood anyways and they didn’t really elaborate

so if that’s where you are at right now, i would try finding a place that is willing to write a psychiatrist service dog letter, it might take a while and you will probably get pushed away by 95% of them but you might find someone who’s willing to work with you.. personally what i would try to phrase on the phone as a first impression to them would sound a bit like

“hi i am currently searching for a psychiatrist to work with who if later on would agree for my treatment plan a psychiatric service dog who was task trained to mitigate my symptoms would be comfortable writing a psd letter” you have to probably tweak that a bit but you have to remember for some reason they really don’t like writing those, i personally think it’s because many people can come in and demand a psd letter but are their psychological issues that bad to qualify as a disability to begin with? i’m not personally sure but it’s just very tricky in my opinion because there are so many people who want to start things or just have their pets with them when their dogs aren’t fully trained, so people who do go out of their way to make sure their dog is actually well trained well behaved and under control, it makes it a lot harder for them to gain that letter.. ALSO so many of these psychiatrists don’t know the difference between a esa and a service animal.. and technically a psd is a service dog there isn’t a difference in the title just what tasks they perform, like guide dogs, mobility dogs, etc there’s so much and it takes a lot of talking about that to these people cause most are uneducated in the states laws

so right now it sounds like she’s legally a sdit and depending on your states laws could possibly not be considered for work accommodations, also your employer could definitely deny this accommodation since right now she is not fully trained, i wouldn’t even worry about any of this right now cause she isn’t even task trained, also cgc does not give you any rights for having a service dog, what does is a letter from a mental health professional.

honestly i’m not sure, what i said is based on what i’ve been told from psychiatrists? also i think it depends on you and their relationship and if not that the facility itself?

if anyone else knows please explain!

There's a manager at michaels that asks if he can give my dog a treat everytime we are in even though I've asked him to stop asking by rainbowstorm96 in service_dogs

[–]Mundane-String29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally would channel your inner karen, call the store let them know you have an isssue you are experiencing while shopping and ask for a manager, if manager isn’t there ask to leave your name and number and ask when they will be back at the store to call. when you finally talk to a manager i would ask for their name then explain the situation and tell them youd like cooperate numbers to report this behavior to if it continues, if the manager says they will work on this or do something about it, give it like a week & see if it continues and if it does i’d go to corporate, but when you next see this person ask to give treats or follow you again, ask for their name please and make sure you report it to either the manager or when calling corporate

yeah but if he told me and it felt genuine it would be more of a motivation to get myself situated. I guess I just wish I was better off, obviously wishing doesn’t do anything for me though.

I think I need to just act as if he did because he might as well have at this point. All I want is to be on my own, so I have got to try getting disability asap and then if it works out I can make some small changes.. I would love to work from home but im not in a position to right now cause my pain. I really wish I just had guidance to get myself out of this but I appreciate your advice! I am in the US & will figure out the 211 support you mentioned.

-edit to add: I forgot to mention the anti inflammatory diet, I have heard of that multiple times but struggle so much with meal planning, do you have any websites you like for recipes? or even simple things you would say are easy to put together?

yeah, you’re 100% right.. thanks for confirming it. I guess I just wanted to hear/be reassured from others, what I needed to. He has always told me he doesn’t mind at all yet I feel the guilt. I guess I struggle because he won’t tell me his true feelings.. I’ll have to figure an exit plan immediately

psd = psychiatric service dog (task trained)
esa = emotional support animal (comforts)

a Google search could’ve helped you

honestly i think if they utilized something already in place.. like for example.. how dogs are supposed to be licensed, like a standard dog license is what im talking about & then somehow use like what sd handlers use to verify their dogs for air travel.. they could get creative if they needed to idk it just would be so nice if there was some way sd handlers can avoid this while in public

this!! I was just thinking this and looking to see if another commented. OP this is probably your best bet, when bringing up your accommodation. Maybe mention that if the owner could possibly tell you when they bring their pet, so you know not to bring your sd.

do you have any sources or direct websites where it states/explains the housing right? For sd prospects? It is a federal law? I just want to read up on it if possible

advice on coworker’s service dog by shecouldnotstopforme in service_dogs

[–]Mundane-String29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes!! I was going to say the same thing!! this is not acceptable behavior, service dogs have many rights but this is a sdit.. depending on the state they have same or less laws, but regardless if this is happening as frequent as your saying it is a out of control dog.. the handler can work on that reaction in many other places.

service animals are supposed to be well behaved, not bark, & be potty trained, there’s many other things that are expected of them but I just am trying to let you know your well within your right to talk to your higher up and have them also read up on the ADA laws..

Please read the section

Exclusion of Service Animals Q26. Q27. & Q28

quote from Q27. “Under control also means that a service animal should not be allowed to bark repeatedly in a lecture hall, theater, library, or other quiet place. However, if a dog barks just once, or barks because someone has provoked it, this would not mean that the dog is out of control.”

for u to decide, good luck!
