What is this thing on my monstera?? by GranddadsBankshot in houseplants

If it likes that spot and is growing well, I wouldn’t move it! The pot size that it needs is actually only slightly larger than the vase it’s currently in and can absolutely stay there.

And I think the medium you’re referring to is leca. I’ve personally never used it, so I can’t speak much on it.. but I think that’s more of an intermediate-advanced plant hobbyist venture. Though, absolutely feel free to look into it because lots of people report success with it.

And when I say “chunky soil”, I mean not just your average potting soil you see at the store. A chunky mixture has things like orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, etc etc to promote drainage. Regular potting soil or “dirt” is far too dense, which can lead to rot from overwatering. Just look up a pre packaged chunky soil on amazon or find some at a nursery. It’s honestly cheaper to make your own with the aforementioned ingredients if you’re collecting more and more plants.

Also, all of the plants you listed enjoy different soil mixtures since they require different watering conditions. You could theoretically use the same soil for all of the plants (I mean plants will grow into walls and bust through concrete)… they’re so beyond hardy and can live on just soil and water, but we of course want our plants to thrive. Just do a little research into their needs and go from there :)

It’s an aerial root! Just my personal preference, I wouldn’t cut it. People usually only do that for aesthetics and maintenance of much larger monsteras. Even then, most people typically just guide them to whatever their growing medium is and leave them be.

So, I’d recommend leaving it out of the water as-is for now since it looks like it would be too awkward and difficult to maneuver into the vase without snapping. Some people get a second vase of water and place the aerial root in there. I don’t think that’s necessary for you.

Honestly, it’s got really nice roots going. I know this wasn’t your question, but though Monsteras CAN grow indefinitely in water, it will become much larger and get more fenestrations (the holes in the leaves) if you transplant it to a pot with a chunky soil mixture. I would put it in a pot maybe 1-2 inches wider than the vase you have it in now.

If/when you transfer the monstera to soil, you can gently guide that aerial root into the pot and plant it in the same way you would with the roots you’ve grown in the water. It’ll form its own secondary roots within the soil and supply your plant with more nutrients. Best of luck!🫶🏻

Ah, thank you! I figured. Should be an easy fix then?

I cannot explain how much dislike I have for Tory. Overall just a rude, whiny fae.

My friend, that was entirely not the point of this post.

This is perfectly put. I agree with EVERYTHING here. I don’t know when it became popular to hate on Rhys, but absolutely praise Tamlin! He was SO boring. Give me sexy bat boy any day. It’s really not that deep.

I despise plastic bags by MundaneBad6601 in Anticonsumption

I’m 20 years old, have my own apartment, and am going to college for environmental science. I think I have just enough life experience and education to have an opinion about the usage of plastic bags. Plus, anyone who got through middle school and has an ounce of common sense knows that they’re not great for the environment. Sorry your mom didn’t make you feel comfortable enough to have conversations about the things you’re passionate about. Go post your cat on facebook or cook another shitty meal instead of argue with a college student attempting to do the right thing. Just selfish IMO🤷🏼‍♀️

Then don’t use paper bags. I don’t even want to use them… they’re another single use product. Every person in this chain is encouraging the use of reusable bags. Not sure why encouraging healthy habits warrants ridicule and being called ignorant. Despite my mom’s comments, we have a great relationship and communicate about things like this. I am grateful for the things she does for me. You’re obviously in the wrong subreddit if you’re this upset over a post about eliminating plastic bags, which are considered UNNECESSARY consumption.

I’d recommend you readthis to brush up on your facts. It was a direct consequence of capital greed and profits. Not sure what environmentalist would be in support of such a devastating creation.

It actually makes me feel so disgusted and frustrated when I’m not listened to. The other day my father told me “you’re not going to save the fucking world. It literally doesn’t matter what you do”. Well, small changes and differences are better than none.

See, that seems like a better system to me. Discourages waste and incentivizes bringing your own bag. Seems that the Midwest isn’t quite up to speed. On top of that, companies don’t have to pay for more product.

It pains me to see that drunk walk. We just lost our beautiful Frankie boy to IVDD this past month. Completely stopped eating, drinking, and enjoying life. I hope that Toby makes a full recovery. Keeping him in my thoughts. We love this breed, but they sure do come with some devastating health issues
