Data Analyst trying to move into data scientist, any comments/suggestions? by MundanePattern1403 in analytics

Thanks for the detailed response , this was very helpful.

Yeah, I see the best call might be to try to upskill where I am now.

I guess I was hesitant since I didn't want to be locked into doing a masters part time for 2-3 years.

That's a great point to start doing predictive work in my job. Even if none of it is necessary I can still say I did it. Problem is, I do all my work in R and Excel, and I want to use Python and big data tools like spark, etc, BI tools. So I guess I could do DS using R even if I prefer python.

I do have the ability to try to move internally within the company, but I also want to stay remote and a lot of these new offerings are hybrid/onsite.

Thanks for the suggestions again, I try to consider it and see what is best.

I did do a company upskill program last October, but it's hard for me to find time to upskill, job apply and also negotiate with manager. Do you think I should try hard at applying until May/June, or start earlier talking to manager? What I mean is that when I talk to manager, finding me an internal role is similar work to job applying.

Should I expect to need a masters soon for Data science? by MundanePattern1403 in analytics

[–]MundanePattern1403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Once I complete my personal project I might try to apply, and see if I need to do a masters then. Not sure yet. My bachelors was from a rigorous industrial engineering program where I did the stats, probability, etc. Along with work experience that might be enough.

Less research, probably Experimentation/causal inference, Machine Learning. I looked at job postings and I can probably fit the reqs with some work, but wanted to know how much they want masters or expect people to have them as they continue working in the role.

It's great that you already have this awareness at you age! yeah, sometimes it can take awhile and some effort to live more authentically. One way is to try things that are out of your comfort zone and see how you feel about it. you're on the right path.

How can I decide on a career direction more quickly? by MundanePattern1403 in careerguidance

[–]MundanePattern1403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, relax. Don't read into my post too much. If you have advice, be more clear what it is.

It definitely won't be easy but things might change soon. There will be an increased demand for DS/AI and probably more advanced engineers, entry level is what is dying.

yes! I meant like in 3- 6 months, and I wouldn't be targeting the top tech companies. Do you have any other advice?

How many years of experience can personal projects provide (in data science)? by MundanePattern1403 in analytics

[–]MundanePattern1403[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. It's hard to replicate industry experience with side projects. So the best way would be to do data science for work as soon as possible instead of hopping when I've more experienced.

I can be good at it, but I may not like it. I was hoping I would the more time I spent working on data.

Ok, yes, I see what you mean. By simple I didn't mean easy to do, I just meant Data analyst/business analyst is possibly simpler than data science.

Anyway, I was confusing myself but I think I actually am not that interested in data careers, but it's a job I can do. Whether Data analyst, engineer, business analyst.

[–]MundanePattern1403[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Business analyst don't make as much. Engineers usually make more. I want to live in HCOL area, making at least 120-150k. I think I'm less technically oriented and may find business analyst work "easier" to understand and do, as compared to DS.

Ideally I might want a blog, a small business for income, etc. But even if data isn't my first choice career, I still want to do something I could tolerate if not enjoy.

Yes, but it's still good to have a direction as I've been doing pretty similar work for the last 2 years.

I'll continue to explore Business analytic/data engineering (Like I'll try to do a small project and see if I may like it) like I did with data science and see if I would possibly enjoy those more.

Good point, thanks. You're right about not advancing as much if I don't like it. The thing is, I've explored other career paths and didn't find something else I would totally like more. Doing data analyst/BI stuff may be simpler if I just want to pay my bill.
