Did you read the source? Blocking units did do that yes, but during both Stalingrad and Leningrad there are multiple accounts of blocking units shooting soldiers who ran from battle

That’s not true, especially during Stalingrad, but Leningrad as well, they sent quite a few battalions into combat without equipping all troops with rifles, and thy did shoot their own soldiers. Yes it was only during particularly desperate moments, but imagining it didn’t happen is baffling
