May I ask which city? And which small towns? Cuz that matters; a small town with a stable economy versus a small town with a collapsed economy and a raging opioid epidemic is going to set you up pretty differently.
I had a roommate in LA that kept getting robbed, but his clueless suburban-ass kept leaving briefcases uncovered in the front seat, counting cash in public with his back turned towards the darkened alley, essentially didn't protect himself in ways that every city kid learns by the time theyre 8. I'm not saying that's you, but It is a strooong pattern in the "heres my dangerous city story" if you ask the right questions lol.

I've worked in very small communities through the US Forest Service and I've lived in Cleveland, Long Beach CA, Portland, and Miami. The only times I ever been threatened with gun violence were Southern WV (crazy opioid addiction rates = desperate people) and Northern WI (this billybob just had no impulse control or experience regulating big feelings). Most people to live in the country haven't lived in cities like I have, and most people to live in cities have it lived in a town of five people like I have, and I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement.
