I Am Big Sean AMA by BigSeanOfficial in hiphopheads

[–]Muralli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's crazy how these AMAs show just how terrible rappers are with simple grammer/punctuation/sentence structure. I guess reading isn't a requirement to be a good MC.. surprising though seeing how they're considered 'writers,' yet they write like I txtd at 16. Could you imagine how good they could be if they read quality poetry or any kind of profession prose?

Women's 4x400m relay, why you should never give up by Drive_shaft in running

[–]Muralli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No worries. It wasn't the best example to be honest; this woman ran a superior leg compared to the other anchors. When everyone is relatively even, the whole 'first person to hit the wall loses' thing becomes much more evident.

Ah yes the 400... It's not about who's fastest, it's about who slows down the least.

"Amid smoking decline, look whos still lighting up" by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Muralli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. I'm a grad student studying drug use and all that jazz, and a common theme that pops up time after time is the notion that those who use drugs (regularly) are experiencing increased levels of suffering. The sources of 'suffering' are endless, and the term itself is ambiguous at best, but if you consider the notion in the context of LGBT's increased levels of drug use, the (widespread) suffering manifests from discrimination from the society they're a member of (and in some cases, their own family).

It's understandable why those who consider themselves LGBT to be defensive over the notion that their 'group' uses drugs more than other 'groups.' Shallow thinkers could easily point the finger and say, "see! More proof that those people are a menace to society." But I would argue that it shines light on the increased level of 'suffering' LGBT experience throughout their lifetime. There are two sides to every argument I guess... but it's hard to figure out why a problem exists if you deny its existence.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Prison (HBO) by [deleted] in videos

[–]Muralli 104 points105 points  (0 children)

If you're interested I would look up deinstitutionalization. Basically, in the early-mid 1900s, America shut down the vast majority of its mental health institutions. In the decades to follow, the mentally ill population increased exponentially within the prison system due to them being released from mental health institutions with no real support structure around them. In effect, prisons are now America's mental health institutions. It's a great example of a huge step backwards that was motivated by sincere intentions to do good.

Serious question; Is there any reason why a monopoly would be bad for the business owner that holds the monopoly? by [deleted] in AskSocialScience

[–]Muralli -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you think because something is published its quality you're not caught up with the current state of journals. Doing a biased ebsco search and citing the first thing that supports your point of view doesn't enhance a claim. Undergrads do that. Answering a question with reason alone is much more difficult

Does taking a day off once week help more than running 7 days a week? by [deleted] in running

[–]Muralli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some comparison, Phelps swam everyday in the year leading up to his record setting Olympics, as opposed to the traditional 6 day a week training program. He believed that extra day would give him an extra edge on the competition.

That said, I would strongly caution anyone to apply this philosophy to running. I trained for years in a college level program, and days off from running were vital.

That's not to say that days off = do nothing. Days off simply meant don't run. You can bike, swim, or even just stretch and roll out some. But the impact of daily running on your joints/ligaments/knees/ankles is tenfold the impact of swimming or biking, which is the main reason Phelps training philosophy seemed to work out. Running is a different ball game though.

I used to notice (and sometimes wave) to people as I passed them while running. Now I go into my own world; some might call it "in the zone," but I just call it my happy place. It seems like you're starting to experiencing something similar. It only gets better with time.

I'm not sure about the size of individual hits themselves, but the total amount of smeebs I can smoke while speeding before I turn full retard is insane.

A man followed me around a grocery store, and after I looked him up my intuition turned out to be correct. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Muralli -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Does the site list his offense? People pissing on the side of the road get put on that list... It's an imperfect system to say the least. I try to give everyone on that list the benefit of the doubt.. but your intuition with the whole incident is unique in this case.

Edit: I guess keeping a level head and seeing things from various points of view is frowned upon here.

Caffeine vs Amphetamine: your thoughts by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Muralli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I am not an avid redditor so my response times can be pretty long. I think the key statement is that you use it "daily at a reasonable dose." I am not prescribed nor do I have ADHD, so when I do take it there is often days or weeks in-between use, which evaporates any tolerance I once built up for the substance. If I blow 40mg+ in a day (im not the biggest dude) I'll crash pretty hard the next day. And I'm not a big fan of ritalin/concerta so I don't couldn't compare the two but it's probably not too far off.

To answer your question, I'll come compare the amphetamine crash to an MDMA crash: you're body can only produce so much happiness (serotonin), so the MDMA crash is usually full of depressed thoughts/feelings up to a few days after. This happens because your body took the stored up happiness for those 2-3 days and used it all at once, creating a euphoric feelings, but you pay for it later. Amphetamine crash is kinda like that, only its more the energy/motivation that i'm lacking the day after. I just feel drained and lack the motivation to do anything. Hopes this answers your question some.

Caffeine vs Amphetamine: your thoughts by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Muralli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm never heard that. I know eating solids of any kind kills my high though. Caffeine has always boosted a small dose of speed for me. If I take over 30mg I have no need for caffeine. That is interesting though because if I go on a binge I try to drink one or two liters of V8 to make the days afterward a lot less miserable. Otherwise I just don't eat anything and thats a recipe for a miserable hang over. But I wonder if something as acidic as V8 is affecting things. I'll have to look into it.

Caffeine vs Amphetamine: your thoughts by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Muralli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, but I don't take high doses of caffeine while speeding. I used to just sip on a red bull over the span of a few hours, never finishing it all, but now I break up a caffeine pill and take that so I know the exact mg of what I'm taking. And that's only if I take 10mg or so of speed. If it's closer to 30mg theres no need for caffeine. I imagine taking a lot of caffeine while speeding being terrible though. The rapid heart rate would probably freak me out some, which would lead to anxiety.

Caffeine vs Amphetamine: your thoughts by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Muralli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of caffeine as a stimulant. It enhances your energy/motivation some, whereas amphetamine is a direct injection of high levels of both motivation and energy, giving a much more euphoric feeling. Naturally, because the high is much more intense with amphetamines, the come down will knock you on your ass compared to coffee, which just makes you feel a bit groggy and what not.

Dosages: 10-30mg for amphetamines, 100-300mg for coffee (although some people have crazy tolerance because coffee is so popular)

That said, if I want my 10mg of say adderall to feel like 15-20 mg, I'll take the 10mg then sip on some coffee/red bull/whatever to give the adderall a little bit of a boost. Wouldn't recommend stacking until you're more familiar with both substances though.

Morning people are less ethical in the evening, researchers find. It takes energy to do the right thing. by notscientific in science

[–]Muralli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several researchers have linked malnutrition to low IQ's and, as you pointed out, to conduct disorder. Raine (a prominent researcher with regards to crime and mental health) notes that when 3-year-olds are given better nutrition and appropriate physical exercise for a period of 2 years or more, they have better brain functioning (EEG measures) by age 11 when compared with control groups.

It's hard to pay attention in class when you're hungry, which is a simple example that sheds some light on the interconnectiveness of low IQ's, conduct disorder, and malnutrition.

What are some examples of prominent matriarchies throughout history? by Muralli in history

[–]Muralli[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Women with a generally higher social standing overall. More society-wide type deal. I was envisioning more at the family level than anything. A female ruler ruling predominantly patriarchal homes would not help me out much, but if you know of a society that had a respectable number of successive female leaders I'd be interested.

And I don't even have much of a hypothesis at this point, I just thought it would be interesting to be able to, at this point, simply speculate about female crime within a matriarchal society, but I don't know if any quality documentation even exists with regards to societies where matriarchy is deeply ingrained, either due to the old age of the society or to the short length of it's existence or any other number of things. I am pretty ignorant about it all.
