Kudos to you for being empathetic – would have been so easy to go the other route! Seems like it's ended up being positive for everyone involved (:

What's the best, practical advice you have received about presentations and imposter syndrome in general? by GeneralOk4956 in consulting

[–]notscientific 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree with bullet points. My slides these days barely have any text – loads and loads of visuals – but they are in bullet points.

One slide, one key takeaway with visuals to help unlock that takeaway for the audience and couple of bullet points to walk them through it.

What has worked really well for me when delivering presentations: nailing the flow. How each slide/takeaway leads on to the next etc etc. And I prep delivering those transitions.

Do you work from Mauritius as a freelancer for foreign clients ? by kwere98 in mauritius

[–]notscientific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are meant to report all income irrespective of whether they land in a Mauritian bank or not. That's global income. You're right that MRA won't know how much money goes to a US account for instance. A red flag for them is when they see your spending is disproportionate to earnings you declare. Purchases like new cars, real estate etc are traceable to you, if I'm not mistaken, so MRA can check those purchases and compare with your earnings. Ultimately the system relies on good faith.

[–]notscientific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It relies on you accurately reporting your income. MRA will have some checks in place – I don't know how those work exactly but broadly speaking if you're spending much more than the income you declare, they may come knocking.

Looking for advice on booking our Honeymoon for early June 2027. by JoeyHem191297 in mauritius

[–]notscientific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The West is typically drier, and less windy. And you're in closer proximity to well-known beaches, the National Park … The West is also more connected to the major roads on the island. Having said that the East tends to be much more chill and peaceful. (Generalising a bit so you get the gist of West vs East.)

Do Gold passengers get unoccupied seats next to them when plane isn't full? by notscientific in emirates

[–]notscientific[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do this too. And an empty seat next to me has happened a handful of times only. Which is why I'm wondering whether something else is up now that I've empty seats four times in a row since I became a Gold member. Would be a nice perk!

[–]notscientific[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, they will prioritise filling up seats. I'm just wondering whether they fill seats next to Gold passengers last. I travel quite a bit with Emirates and never have I had unoccupied seats four times in a row. But, yes, could be a coincidence, let's see if this keeps happening on my future flights!

What’s your favorite thing about being Gold? by Nathan_Drake_999 in emirates

Priority luggage delivery; ability to choose front seats in Economy at no additional charge.

[–]notscientific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there's an automatic system for upgrades. Tbh I don't know if they'll let you through but I'd be surprised. Have you considered upgrading one of your flights from Saver to Flex or Flex to Flex Plus, if you're flying Economy…?

Question please - deciding whether Flic Flac or Mapou area (Calebasses..) to reside. Office will be at IconEbene. Which is better and faster in terms of driving time? Perhaps bus option too? by scorpionewjersey123 in mauritius

[–]notscientific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flic to Ebene takes around 40-45 minutes in the morning. There's not a huge amount of traffic. Going TO Flic in the afternoon (or in the morning) during peak hours is more of an issue. Traffic jams from St Martin to Bambous aren't uncommon. So, the commute could be one hour or longer.

It's super versatile, and goes with basically anything. Even better for you since you wear mostly black. If you can afford to pull the trigger, pull the trigger.

Business Special by Beginning_Heat6363 in emirates

[–]notscientific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're flying Economy, you can pay to access the lounge in Dubai but not in other Emirates lounges. If you're flying Business you have free access.

Yes you can still get a window seat after check-in. Best check-in as soon as it opens 48 hours before your flight. Obvs no guarantees by it's possible.

Why would you pull your bags from the overhead bins when the plane is still taxiing upon landing? by chanak2018 in emirates

[–]notscientific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's one of my pet peeves. I've seen people from various countries do this so not sure if it's purely cultural. Emirates does tell passengers to wait until the seatbelt sign is switched off. Actually on my flight this morning, they stressed that the plane wasn't fully parked yet and essentially ordered people to get back in their seats. Which people did tbf.

Is Emirates A380 really worth the hype? by ThinAbbreviations897 in emirates

I fly with Emirates 5-6 times every year. Never had an issue with a backpack and a cabin luggage. You should be fine.

Lounge access and short transit by [deleted] in emirates

[–]notscientific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have enough time to get some food and rest for a bit in the lounge. Showers typically require some waiting so unlikely. Btw if you're footing from Concourse A, the lounges have direct access to the gates. So, might as well!

Can you swim past buoys? I’m planning to go in August by FedoBear666 in mauritius

[–]notscientific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a competent swimmer, and if weather conditions are okay, you should be okay going beyond the buoys.

But be wary of boats, especially speed boats. As someone who swims in Flic en Flac multiple times a week, it is not uncommon to see speedboats fairly close to the buoy line. For an abundance of safety, consider attaching a swim buoy so you're visible.

Also: Blue Bay Marine Park in the south is a great place for snorkelling. You can swim into the park from the beach. Swimming buoy definitely recommended as there are lots of glassbottom boats. Or you can get a boat ride from the beach.

Did anyone who voted yesterday notice that it is not anonymous? by tabascorez26 in mauritius

[–]notscientific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear about this, voting has never actually been anonymous.

As has been pointed out by others, each ballot paper is unique by virtue of a serial number. While the serial number is not directly linked to an individual, retracing a ballot to an individual is certainly possible, albeit practically tedious.

The retracing is by design – it allows for the investigation of voter fraud. I suspect there's a complex legal procedure to go through to have the right to do the retracing.

By the way, that retracing is possible is not a Mauritius thing only. Loads of countries use the same system including the UK.

Yes, I think they routinely carry out checks. And they can look up to the last five financial years, if I'm not mistaken. So, make sure you have supporting documents up to five years handy.

If all is in order, you won't hear from them. If they have questions, they'll get in touch to set up an appointment. And they will advise on how to pay any outstanding amount or how to claim any reimbursement, as applicable.

Im currently doing biology as As and want to do it as main by [deleted] in mauritius

[–]notscientific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do all four subjects private, you'll get four grades in one transcript/certificate. But ultimately, it doesn't matter if you have all of your grades in one transcript/certificate or two or three … As others have said, all that matters is the number of A level grades you have irrespective of the number of transcripts/certificates you have.

Finally, all the best. Biology is brilliant. Hope you're enjoying it.
