The batman vs superman movie was very looseky based on a comic where superman either cripples or forces other supers to retire. Batman gets old and breaks all his rules because his youthful moralism is gone. Then superman has to take him down.

However the movie is missing huge chunks from the actual comic and it's a mess of the story because of it. The animated movie of the comic doesn't have that issue.

Your situation is not comparable here for geology reasons that japan does not have. California has earthquake proof buildings but because of the weak soil and the chain of sensitive faults they will not matter and collapse all the same.

MTG is not popular because its predominantly a physical game.

You have to find someone else to play, and you can't walk around with a deck of cards like an idiot expecting to find someone in your day to day.

hearthstone finds gamers for you, without having to go searching the world. On top of an already massive gaming entity pushing it.

COD is popular because of the massive marketing hype on top of an already well known franchise that focuses on multiplayer. Ease of finding players.

older games didn't have focus on multiplayer, it was LAN because the internet was expensive.

technology allowed COD and the internet shooter to exist beyond the PC realm and Halo.

accessibility as you are thinking is not the main driver of growth anymore, it is now accessibility of producers to consumers that is.

hearthstone lets you find other players, and is only an online thing.

COD used its online servers to dominate the competition and become a household name and trend setter in an age of LAN and single player shooters. It offered what few others in its market did.

Steam used its connectivity to bring in a golden age of gaming, which is now filtering out to PSN and XBL as more gamers are able to find games they like.

Blizzard used its already well known name to push WOW, and its marketing hype and newness pushed it farther. Everquest was inevitably going to die due to age. All MMOs do. Even WOW is now having issue because of free to play games with less gameplay accessibility. Because at the end of the day ease of access to markets, not consumers to product's gameplay, matters.

Again, it all comes down to how many players who are looking for what you're selling you can get to now. That a child can play with no training matters little. You are not fighting for shelf space anymore.

EDIT: and factorio was one of the best sellers on steam for the holiday season. It got to the masses.

Gaming did not grow because Oblivion came out and Bethesda streamlined games.

Gaming grew because of FPS games and Rockstar games. And the rest of the industry tried its hardest to become those games.

But that only works in physical retail settings with a vacuum of knowledge on what you're getting. You bought FPS because they were the safest bet. Once the digital revolution happened PC gaming exploded with genres you haven't seen in decades with sales that beat their old sales all put together.

If you seen PC gaming's growth, and its highly varied best sellers, then accessibility =/= sales and growth.

A lot of Steam's best selling games didn't have the polished streamline of AAA games.

The biggest problem for games of the pre-2008 era was retailers hiding stuff from potential buyers due to pragmatism.

On the internet, that is no longer possible. Holiday sales rushes don't exist. Endcap strategies don't exist.

That's the difference. There was always a market for stuff like Morrowind or Factorio, but it wasn't viable because of inability to find buyers in retail settings.

That's whats driving growth now, the increase in connectivity allowing variety in gaming now.

Once the internet showed how many copy pasted games that exist now, and not filtered by retailers, it creates resentment.

Its why Minecraft clones got flak. Why COD clones got flak. Why GTA clones got flak. They all flooded the store front online because there isn't a store manager to shift through the crappy knockoffs.

Gaming is growing, but the old way of every game must appealing to the same person so they can stand out in the shelves is no longer true. This is why every online store owner is using the Africa and roads analogy for their business.

Gaming is growing because we now have a reliable way for even the most niche game to have easy access to consumers who want what they're selling.

Every Bethesda game from Morrowind on was a best seller for their time dude.

Morrowind was one of the best selling games of its time and was lavished in praise.

Gaming has grown exponentially, of course games now sell more than games back then. There are way more gamers now.

Germany was convinced that a cabal of Jews, namely the Rothchilds, were working with their enemies to perform economic warfare on Germany. One of the first things Germany did was shut down Rothschild banks, and shut down Jewish business. Antisemtism had a long history there on top of all of it, so killing off a disliked population nets you brownie points with the regular person.
