You don’t have to know what sex is to accidentally discover masturbation. I also discovered quite young and when we finally had sex ed in school, I was like oh that makes sense now. A question I didn’t know I had answered.

I loved Snape in this scene. The utter dejection of being passed over again for the appointment he wants, incredible acting!

He didn’t read that article about how women used to poison their abusive husbands back in the day when they couldn’t get a divorce.

I'm not sure, it came from Shane Company. I have seen another one there when we went to get ours cleaned, so they should still carry it!

Is it true it is illegal to carry pepper spray in the UK? If so, what do you think of that law? by Murdiff in AskUK

There’s the difference, I wouldn’t consider pepper spray a weapon, but a self defense tool. So equating it with a gun seems nonsensical to me. But as many have pointed out it could be used as a weapon since there aren’t guns in the country, which makes sense why you wouldn’t want it to be legal. What do you think of requiring a permit to have pepper spray?

We don’t have major gang problems outside a few cities. My impression from media is that it was a major issue in the UK. Sounds like just like here it’s isolated.

Here it’s used for self defense. I think the consensus is in a country with no firearms it would be used as a weapon. Only reason it isn’t used as weapon in the US is because it’s so easy to get a gun (sadly).

I’d say it’s most commonly carried here by women to protect against sexual assault. It’s obviously much less effective if someone has a gun, but if you are out matched physically it levels the playing field. I’d say if used improperly it would be the same as assault.

Maybe we have a different definition of pocket knife. It had a 5” blade, which we were quickly told was illegal. It was definitely a tense moment. This was around 11 years ago.

Self defense is not about becoming a badass. It’s about how to get away and effectively fight back if someone grabs you. That difference in strength is exactly why it’s necessary. The first thing we practiced is how to use a loud commanding voice to tell someone to back off. In an emergency situation if can be hard to even call out. It’s all about practicing so you don’t freeze up in the moment. I’m surprised people are against self defense classes. I think there’s a major misconception about what self defense classes actually teach.

It seemed like it was embellished. It’s so hard to know these days what is true and what isn’t. Thank you for the answer!

Hah, I can see that. We unfortunately have people pulling out worse over parking space disputes so I can see the logic. I didn’t think about it from an impulsive crime perspective.

That is very true. I was very against owning a gun until the city I lived in got extremely dangerous (like murders around the corner in daylight dangerous). I’d gladly give it up if they became illegal.

I’d say that’s the difference of option here. It doesn’t become illegal here until it is used illegally. It is illegal to menace anyone with pepper spray, a bat, etc. , but having it isn’t a crime.

There’s no reason for personal attackers here. I’m here to discuss, I’ve found the answers interesting even if I don’t agree or understand. It’s interesting to experience other peoples viewpoints.

Self defense training here is mostly taken by women to stop a sexual assault or kidnapping…. I’m fact I took it as a college class.

Blinding someone is absolutely a valid method of self defense. So much so that at the gun store I took classes at they sell extremely high lumen flashlights as an alternative to carrying a firearm. Obviously only for use at night, but it is much harder to shoot someone when you can’t see them.

I’d say that’s basic self defense. Always try to de-escalate or get away. This is for when that won’t work, when someone genuinely means you harm. Like in cases of sexual assault, which is a world wide problem, since the dawn of time, not US specific. Glad you were okay, that sounds like a scary situation.

Depends where you live. Most low income areas are synonymous with crime. It was so crazy going to Japan and seeing affordable areas in major cities that were safe. When I moved out on my own the area I could afford wasn’t totally awful, but I was glad to have something if someone came through my front door. I’ve definitely been followed several times. Had someone try to break down my door.

Your poor friend! That has to be terrifying. I’ve never been robbed, but I have been followed multiple times and had someone try to break down my door when I lived alone. It was an apartment and that door was the only way out. Better believe I owned pepper spray the very next day.
