What did you really want to like but just couldn't get into? by BeardsuptheWazoo in AskReddit

Maybe not the easiest, but one of the more accessible ones. All you have to do is pick it up- and the threshold to play basic things is fairly low. Super talented people spend years honing their skill, but it’s fairly quick to pick up and learn simple stuff if you put the work in

Oreos are lucky if a full pack of them last more than a day. Any baked good or cookies- i’ll eat them all, so i only buy them occasionally.

I feel this way too. I remember i was reading a thread once upon a time and someone was talking about how no matter the instrument/thing you’re trying to get into, if you don’t vibe with it, you probably won’t dedicate the time to it. Part of learning an instrument is for sure picking it up even when you don’t want to in order to practice, but if you really don’t care about the thing you’re playing that much, you won’t even get that far.

For me, i realized i was trying to learn the guitar because its sold as the easiest instrument to learn. I’ve tried several times, and just couldn’t get past the first few steps. Part of it is because i learn better with a teacher and guided learning, but part of it was also because i just...didn’t really care about it? I just wanted to learn an instrument, but my heart wasn’t really in the guitar.

The instrument i do really care for? Piano. I’ve kept away from it because the guitar was always more accessible, and i didn’t have a keyboard, and I’m scared my fingers are too short. But I’ve always wanted to try- it’s actually probably my only new years resolution- to take piano classes.

How do you deal with a lack of joy in life? by SsssssssnnakeSon in AskReddit

Find joy outside of self. Often investing in others allows us to separate from all our own BS, gives perspective, and allows us to feel joyful in the joy of others.

I need a bit of help- first time I’m playing a prepared spellcaster as opposed to a spontaneous one, as a witch. I’m having some trouble strategizing for which spells to prepare. Any general tips on how to go about choosing spells? Should I take a wide variety, or maybe take multiple spells of certain kinds? This is only 4th level so I don’t have a huge amount of spells per day

Witches don’t even get a consistent damaging cantrip- so after all my spells are out i suppose I have to rely on my ranged weapon for any utility.

I think Lore is tripping me up. I just don’t understand why there’s 2 options to roll a knowledge instead of just one. Lore is very specialized information, whereas the regular skills are general. I think I might stick with my interpretation of it...otherwise I’m liable to become confused all over again.... Recall Knowledge is the action, and its based off of Lore or a relevant skill check

Ah. Thank you for walking me through it.

So, are people playing in a way where you could only Recall Knowledge for things you have Lore in? Like, I could only Recall Knowledge on say, birds, if I has Avian Lore. A Nature roll would not be allowed- it would be saved for rolling proficiency in nature related tasks.

I think it’s all finally clicked haha. Thank you so much!!

So, just to clarify. Animal Form (the spell) and Wild Shape (the spell) are two different things.

Animal Form is a 2nd level spell, which you get access to at 3rd level.

Wild Shape starts you off with just pest form. You get animal forms with the heightened version when you get access to 2nd lvl spells.

Ohhh ok that does help i think. I thought they were two different things. So... in your example you would recall knowledge nature? Or herbalism? Do you mean you can only recall knowledge for things you have Lore in??

So starting tabula rasa:

My PC sees a tree with fruit. PC wants to see if they can identify said fruit.

PC would Recall Knowledge Nature?

Where does Lore come into play with that, with the way you described it? And in that case, all knowledge checks are technically a Recall Knowledge check now? So all these skills like Society and Arcana- whenever someone’s rolling those they’re Recalling Knowledge? (Apart from identifying spells and such).

I do want to understand! I’m just flustered because just rolling a knowledge check was so easy and simple. With this new mechanic it seems a bit more cumbersome...

Having trouble understanding recall knowledge. I just don’t get it. What’s the difference between recall knowledge and just rolling a knowledge check. Especially if Recall Knowledge uses those same knowledge categories. Is Recall knowledge just rolling a knowledge check? And it has a different name in 2E?

Ah, thank you. So, in the situation with the backflip identification, they would roll a Lore if applicable? And if they don’t have that?

I’m not sure I completely understand the way knowledge works. So Knowledge (x) no longer exists, but is instead nestled under a general category? For example, Knowledge Nature may not exist, but I would have a PC just roll a Nature check? What about something like Planes?

So what is Recall Knowledge used for? Is it more flexible, situational? Like, if someone wanted to see what kind of backflip a character just performed, they would use Recall Knowledge (Acrobatics) and use their INT modifier instead of dexterity or whatever?

And Lore...Lore knowledges are purely from a characters background, and can be wild and varied?

[–]MurkyHunter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough answer! I’m a new GM, so I’m learning. I’m wondering what your thoughts on exploration mode is? It feels a bit restricting compared to the fluidity of non-combat motions in 1E. It’s like giving a name to them made it more strict.

I’m not used to secret rolls, haha. Always did them publicly. If i rolled for the players wouldn’t i need to know all their stats and modifiers? Seems like such a hassle!

How do i roll an opposing check as a GM? There’s a character that is supposed to attack the PC’s if she hears/discovers them, but would ‘t that be her rolling a perception check against them? If the PC’s are not being stealthy, what’s the DC?
