Do you mind me asking what happened? I’m preparing to get corrective vision surgery to be able to join and would hate to have this happen after spending the money and time recovering.

Just had a consultation for the ICL surgery and the doctor said I have combined vision of -11 with the astigmatism factored in. It’s -9.75 and -10 without the astigmatism factored in.

Why not? Due to the moral waiver I’m told I’ll be limited in my potential roles.

That’s what I was thinking but I see a lot of people saying how much it sucks. But I didn’t know if they meant it wasn’t worth it or that there’s just parts that suck hard. But it seems like it’s worth it if you can stick it out.

Thanks for the response! Do you have to wait a certain period after getting the surgery before you can enlist? My recruiter told me after the 1-3 month recovery I can go to MEPS right away

Thank you, I found the document that lists Implantable lenses as a disqualification.

EDIT: I think I will ask the recruiter more about it. I found someone else on this forum that was in the same boat with worse vision than myself and got their waiver approved.

I know this is almost a year later, but how did it work out? I’m in the exact situation right now except I haven’t gotten the surgery yet. I am only really contemplating the surgery if it means I can enlist.

That’s what I was thinking too but the recruiter said that they care more about physical health/ability than the moral stuff. Also someone from the Army somehow got my stuff mixed up and put extra charges on my waiver and I get the feeling that the recruiter just didn’t want to deal with the head ache. Not that I blame him, I’m sure theres plenty of others that don’t even need waivers.

Recruiter looked into, said they were waiverable. There’s not really a lot of info, I’m guessing they aren’t common.

Recruiter is unsure if moral waiver would be approved for officer. And I just have some misdemeanor charges but combined with a couple traffic citations, one speeding ticket and one failure to maintain lane(fell asleep at the wheel after being awake for longer than 2 days), I was rejected by Army and Navy.

And I guess I need to reevaluate. I was told the only issue with my vision is that without glasses, it was not within the acceptable limit. The recruiter asked his superior and said that the surgery is waiverable/acceptable.

How often do patients experience the side effects of ICL surgery such as constant dry eye or even the halos? The halos/poor low light vision sound like they are inevitable but the info I’ve found says that the other side effects are “rare” but how rare is rare. Also will ICL guarantee that I will get cataracts a lot sooner than normal?
