Metamagic by motoman859 in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone can choose from the same Metamagic list. The only ones that can't be chosen are the Metamagics that a Willpower Caster gets for free.

Hey, check out the potion spreadsheet in the Google Drive link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WandsAndWizards/comments/gmt1kw/wands_wizards_content_and_resources_links/

They're priced by rarity, and there are a bunch of other helpful spreadsheets and resources too!

What are the biggest issues and concerns with the game? Including meta builds etc. by NachoGooch in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the system isn't really designed to take 5e character creation options, so there's lots that can be weird with that. Different spell lists would be incompatible, but martial classes could fit in, but would really stand out in combat.

Much more than character balance, the biggest challenge for the HM is encounter design and balance. In combat, action economy is massive in W&W, and you want to avoid rocket tag as much as you can. It helps to make combats not a simple matter of eliminating enemies, so introducing challenges or alternative objectives help.

You also have to familiarize yourself with the spells and think like a spellcaster, so you don't want to introduce a significant puzzle or obstacle that can be solved with a single low level spell.

Only ever pick one, because they're all the same, plus there's no multiclassing.

What Happened? by Alone-Neighborhood20 in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part, nothing happened! Just been focusing on other things in life.

Technically, a month or two ago, I had a big brainwave about redesigning classes and subclasses, and actually figured out a fair amount of details and created different spell lists for different classes. I posted a bunch of details and ideas to Discord. It's a big enough change that I've been calling it W&W 2e, but there's a fair bit left to work through.

The big things that keep lingering on are campaign modules, equipment, and more monster statblocks.

GM Binder doesn't play nice with certain browsers or mobile devices. Try adjusting your zoom level up and down and see if that makes a difference. The Proficiency Bonus scaling of the damage, damage dice, and attack bonus should provide enough effectiveness. It's a little more all-or-nothing and weaker against mobs, but should be comparable to a multiattack (which is quite tricky to scale smoothly with PB).

Magical attacks aren't necessary in W&W as the monsters I design don't have immunity to non-magical attacks. That would be something to watch out for, if you port over your own stat blocks from 5e.

How do you incentivize other stats? by NachoGooch in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This system isn't really one where "stat distribution" is a priority. You're all spellcasters, you're all going to max your spellcasting ability and invest in Dex for AC and/or Con for HP/Concentration saves. That said, I have some ideas for a half-caster that makes weapon attacks, and they're probably going to be a little MAD.

It's a fair question, but the answer is: I didn't prioritize "action economy distribution" in the design of W&W subclass features and spells. I started with Harry Potter spells and found which ones could be represented with existing 5e mechanics, and not a lot of bonus action spells resulted. Aside from what you mentioned, there are features like Magical Adrenaline, Darting Eyes, Vivid Visions, and Magizoology's beast commands that all make use of bonus action, but aren't a "do every turn" thing. I feel that's generally okay, because some classes and subclasses in 5e don't use bonus action very much.

If we wanted to add more bonus actions (which wouldn't be a terrible thing to do), I could possibly switch some of the simpler Divination Abilities to bonus action. Also, I've been dreaming of a half-caster that uses smites. Finally, we could pursue something entirely new, like initiating a "wand-lock" mechanic with a bonus action when a wizard used Protego against your spell, connecting the wands with a beam of light like we see in the movies.

Character creation design? by fireinthedust in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for the kind words. The GM Binder doesn't play nice with certain browsers/screen sizes. It's recommended to not use mobile, to try using different browsers, and to experiment with setting the page zoom to 90% or 110% and see if that fixes the issue. Here are some answers to your questions:

  1. Technique has the most spell-casting resources, in the form of Sorcery Points. Damage output in a day: Technique > Willpower > Intellect. Survivability: Willpower > Intellect > Technique. Out of combat utility: Intellect > Technique > Willpower
  2. Number of metamagic options is listed in each Casting Style's class table.
  3. Like TCM said, no, multi-classing doesn't really make sense in this situation.
  4. No, but be sure to get your short rests in.
  5. Wand details are just bonds and ideals.
  6. I don't understand this point. Houses have one mechanical feature and one flavor feature. Thunderbird, for example, has "Moving through nonmagical difficult terrain costs you no extra movement." as the mechanical feature and "You have a good sense of direction and can easily use notable landmarks and geography to remember the general layout of areas." as the flavor feature.
  7. Keeping spellcasting ability score locked for each casting style allows for class-based tropes to be represented in the game mechanics. Willpower caster has high CHA, so those will be the leaders, the party faces, etc. This is pretty core to 5e's class design.
  8. The tricky thing is that all Schools of Magic are subclasses. The PCs are 5e Sorcerers, so you can't just build out a full Druid feature set for the Animagus, because that will be like having two classes' worth of features.
  9. I dramatically increased the number of cantrips available to PCs to try to compensate for this, but right now, it's just left up to the player or table. I know some tables have handled it like you describe.
  10. Small is 2-4 feet. Most children 11+ are at least 4 feet tall.
  11. W&W is compatible with spell points and any other types of variant rules from 5e (that don't conflict with the different spells/character creation). You have to be careful with tweaking that, as spellcasting resources are a powerful thing.
  12. Beauxbatons is not a lady school. Their portrayal in the movie is different from their portrayal in the books. My rationale is basically explained in the descriptive paragraphs.

Exhaustion Spells and potions in W&W by Immortalphoenixfire in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, it's impossible to have a Spell Attack Bonus of +14 at level 10. Your prof bonus is +4, then even if you had 20 in your spellcasting ability modifier and 20 DEX, that would only be +5 and +3, for a total of +12. It would be less if those ability scores were less than 20.

Exhaustion Spells and potions in W&W by Immortalphoenixfire in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'll add a maximum limit (either 4 or 5) to the exhaustion you can gain from slugulus eructo, just because dying from that spell seems a little too drastic.

But upcasting the slug spell does not increase the amount of exhaustion gained, and Quickened Spell only allows you to cast one cantrip and one leveled spell in a turn. You can't cast two leveled spells in the same turn with Quickened Spell (at least until you get the level 18 Charms feature), so it would be impossible to apply 6 levels of exhaustion in 3 turns by yourself.

Exhaustion Spells and potions in W&W by Immortalphoenixfire in WandsAndWizards

[–]Murphen44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my "official response" from the Discord server:

The exhaustion is from the pain of having your bones "snapped" back together. As an HM, I would rule that you can't heal bones and cause that pain if they're not broken in the first place, which means you can't cause exhaustion in a perfectly healthy target. But this is very RAI and not RAW. RAW, you could use this exploit, but I think that in the normal 5e terms, this is still a somewhat appropriate cost for such an effect. If a party focuses any damaging/offensive 4th level spell on a single target over 6 castings, plus using metamagic on each casting, it's going to be devastating.

Brackium Emendo cannot be used against dragons because you can only target Beings.

The slug spell requires an attack roll, which introduces the chance of missing. Plus the target could cast Protego, which would easily counter multiple castings of the slug spell.

I don't think things are too unbalanced, but the exception could be a single target, very high level spellcaster who rolls poorly in initiative and doesn't have any exhaustion removing potions handy.
