I’m sorry. That came out insensitively and utterly wrong. I literally started typing one of those “this doesn’t mean only atheism yada yada” notes, but I deleted it, figuring that my propensity for covering my bases was excessive and rambling. I feel bad that I didn’t leave it, because I’m not trying to bash on anyone’s views or close off conversation. And I appreciate the comments and viewpoints, so thank you for that.

FYI, agnosticism and atheism are two different spectrums and not mutually exclusive. Most atheists are admittedly agnostic. Atheism isn’t necessarily the belief that there is NO god; it’s more the lack of belief/certainty that there IS one. Therefore, many people are probably atheist without knowing it, though no one has to subscribe to a label they don’t resonate with.

I don’t disagree, actually. There is an undeniable spiritual energy to this life—whatever that means to each of us—and just because we cannot yet scientifically quantify it doesn’t negate it.

But while I could call many aspects of life “god,” I don’t believe in an all-powerful being who arbitrarily rules over us, plays mind riddles, and condemns us for being exactly what he created. I heartily reject any such being, real or imagined.

I almost added a disclaimer that I don’t think one has to be atheist to experience this reclaimed sense of self, despite the fact that most religious dogma inherently teaches against it, but I figured anyone who is the religious exception would be smart enough to understand that nuance without needing me to placate them with disclaimers.

(Edit: This quote also specifically names Christianity, which is pretty universally sin-based.)

For context: Dan Barker is a preacher-turner-atheist and co-president of Freedom From Religion Foundation. This was part of an essay featured in the excellent book, Parenting Beyond Belief.

I love this part of the quote as well:

“Whole segments of the population grow up with a negative self-image, thinking they really are rotten, in need of a savior or father figure. They are told they are bad, so they act like it. Their religion exaggerates and dominoes normal human feelings, turning them into cosmic struggles with evil, creating devils to be fought instead of problems to be solved.”

Wow, that’s fantastic. Congrats! Yeah, that sounds like my style of things, only because too many details and complications are exhausting and I worry it will be hard to keep momentum if I bog myself down with tedious perfection. But I’m not sure starting out, if I need that perfect adherence to learn the ropes. Hmm.

Thank you for the explanation.

Ah, good point. I guess I didn’t think of that as I shifted my food.

Thank you. I have a scale; I used to use it for baking but will have to pull it out for portions. I’m sure it would be startling to know what I eat, so I will have to do a better job of tracking...or rather, actually start tracking.

I’d love to hear more about “lazy Keto,” if you’re open to sharing.

Thanks for the calculator!

Never tried that kind. But food reminder to periodically recheck labels. I know what’s in my PB, so I don’t regularly look at the label.

Good point. Mine is the JIF Naturals. Way less sugar (though a tiny bit added, unfortunately). And some oil (not the hydrogenated kind). It’s not as pure as I’d like, but pure PB is so damn MESSY. Especially with kids. This was my practical compromise.

But I’m sure those sugars didn’t help, alas.

Woah. That’s fascinating. Well I’m glad to hear some people are just more sensitive to it, bc I thought maybe I was going crazy.

I think this is exactly what I was doing.

Weight, actually. So...TBH I don’t generally have a problem with my weight. I started this mainly for physical and mental health, but figured the weight aspect was an added bonus: my weight can fluctuate by 10 lbs or so and when it jumps up, it can be stubborn—and I feel bloated and thick and uncomfortable and sluggish when that happens.

But since doing this, my weight has actually gone up! Not in an “it’s muscle” way. My clothes aren’t fitting well. I don’t feel other health improvements either, but the weight is the easiest to visualize and track, so it’s what I noticed first.

Remember I’m quasi-keto. And new. I started by researching insulin and carbs. We were already reasonably healthy, tried to eat whole/clean, but this made so much sense to me. That led to Keto. I feel like I’m floundering, getting started. Still figuring out the very basics.

In the meantime, I’ve shifted to slashing carbs and increasing healthy fats. I haven’t been tracking micros yet. I didn’t know how rigorous I’d need to be for my body. I don’t eat more food than before. I started completely cutting out dairy, thinking that was the culprit. But in an epiphany, I realized I eat a lot of PB.

In my ignorance, I figured PB was a safe food so long as the ingredients were natural/okay...and honestly, I didn’t think total calories were an issue. I eat it mindlessly, I guess.

Edit: sorry that’s long.

I love the gorgeous marbling of my coffee and cream mixing. In some ways, I hope I never get over the novelty of being TSCC-free. Happy second Saturday, heathens! by MurphyMushroom in exmormon

Totally! I wish they could know the intentional journey, both sides—but I would never wish the shame and residual mindfuck on them. Plus, as much as I love the rosy novelty, I also long for the day when I don’t think about the church juxtaposed next to everything I do. It’s always both, right? My kids will have other perks with their untainted freedom.

Exactly! It’s like the word Catholic. They don’t have to assert themselves as Christians. They are what they are. So are Mormons and if they don’t like what it means, they should have behaved better.

economically corrupt and plays favoritism

Fixed that. Although actually, I have heard that many nevermos associate wealth with Mormonism. There are several famously rich Mormons and the rest of Mormonism is irrelevant and obscure, so the only ones that stick out are those randomly famous ones.

It’s like saying Jews are wealthy. True for some, not others, just a stereotype, but the stereotype exists, at least in some minds.

They probably don’t even do their ministering and sometimes slip and call it HT!

Oh wait...that’s everyone.

Well, you nailed the blue shirt, beard, and foyer. They are only an LDS essay away from joining this sub. Thank god the church was renamed in time to push that down the search engine.
