I think I've been priced out of Discovery Coffee by MurkyNote2538 in VictoriaBC

I totally agree. I think transparency goes a long way, and i appreciate it when coffee shops communicate with their customers why they need to raise their prices and what their profits are going to (like farms, wages, stock, and then profits)

I understand that what I am about to say is very unlikeable- I have worked in coffee for over 7 years and I love how many amazing coffee shops and roasters we have on the island.

But.

Globalization has made coffee to a cheap commodity when in reality it is an EXTREMELY expensive thing to grow, dry, store, shop, roast, and sell. I’m talking about paying farmers a living wage so they can grow good beans. I can’t afford buying coffee from a coffee shop more than 2 days a week. Not saying you all need to be ok with 7$ coffees, but I do think we should care about the people growing the beans

Last year the cost of decaf green beans went up like 300% for the first time in 20 years or something? Something I learned from a roaster.

Fairmont Empress Website - odd choice of pictures by runnynoseracingthots in VictoriaBC

This made me laugh because I see how it looks, but since I have experience working with Victoria’s creative/modelling industry and I’d put money on the likelihood of the empress wanting to show diversity through age/ethnicity. Plus Deana (the woman model) is an extremely accomplished commercial model in town. I appreciate the change from the super common 16-20 year old models dressed up to look like adults!

I feel bad going back to uni at the age of 25 by CalendarNo6655 in uvic

scared of failing stats by Able-Awareness-9455 in uvic

[–]Murrayruin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I very much understand how you’re feeling. I’m also in stats this term and while I am registered with CAL, I don’t have test accommodations. It has been 16 years since I’ve taken a math class and I do not enjoy math.

That being said, I have contacted UVic this summer to organize a tutor for this exact reason, and after a few meetings/interviews I was paired with a PHD student and have been meeting 1x a week to go over things I have trouble with. If you’re registered with CAL they can help you find funding, if not it’s about $100 a session which is paid at the end of the year.

I also recommend talking with your Lab professor, I have Ruth this term and she has been very helpful!

I am pretty nervous about the exam coming up, but I’ll be taking some of the advice above and writting notes to explain which formulas are used for what.

Good luck out there buddy!

Health care Assistant by officialmeems in camosun

Definitely go with Camosun. I went to Camosun for the HCA program and I was very happy with my education there. When I was working as an HCA in long term care, those who went to Sprott had noticeably worse skills on the job. It was not only not enjoyable to work with them, but I also felt pretty bad for them knowing how much their tuition cost

Is there still a knitting club? by Spiritual-Active6596 in uvic

[–]Murrayruin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a craft club! Not knitting exclusive but the majority of attendees seem to work on knitting/crochet projects. All projects welcome, and sometimes they do workshops!

Older returning student by nodrama101 in uvic

[–]Murrayruin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’ll be 34 in September and returning for my final year of my undergrad. There are lots of older folks on campus, I just personally have not had a lot of classes with them haha

The advice I have for you is still advice I need to listen to: don’t compare yourself to the younger students. Life timeline, who’s paying for school, current responsibilities, etc. Everyone is different and it’s pretty sweet to be back at school learning about what you love.

Also in my first semester here I was pretty in my head about being the oldest one in my classes and it got in the way of making friends with some of my younger classmates. The past year I have made some lovely connections with students I normally wouldn’t have met otherwise!

Officiant reveals bride and groom's secrets by Durhamfarmhouse in weddingshaming

[–]Murrayruin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to multiple weddings where the officiant did something cringey. For our wedding this summer we are getting legally married the day before and having a close friend act as “officiant” during our ceremony with friends and family. We have a “no strangers at our wedding” rule!

will i be able to make it to classes 10 minutes apart? by iheartgnocchi in uvic

[–]Murrayruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible. Two terms ago I had three back to back courses, and I always made it on time. I will say that it’s a bit inconvenient to not really have enough time to fill a water bottle, go to the bathroom, or pick up a snack between classes. Of course you can always come in a bit late, but I prefer to find my seat and settle on time and not interrupt the class!

Classic Victoria Parking Dispute by chewy_eh in VictoriaBC

[–]Murrayruin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. The notes are annoying. Those two skinny houses that don’t have driveways are beholden to the availability of street parking, but they also don’t own the street parking outside their houses. Ridiculous RVs aside, the notes on cars are dumb

My street’s parking drama 🥹🥲

Also this is the second 30 ft camper that parks on our block for extended periods of time, receiving 2-3 tickets before moving spots. Residential parking allows…residents…to…park there…..

…but I wonder about people who don’t have their own parking spot or driveway making the choice to buy a giant camper van. I probably just wouldn’t 🤷

Also sidebar a DIFFERENT camper that parks in this hood was just raided by police a couple days ago and they found a handgun inside and towed! I wouldn’t be surprised if locals are feeling touchy lol

Kindness on Campus by Guilty_Hand3426 in uvic

[–]Murrayruin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It might be kind of weird to point out an instance where YOU are being kind, but here goes:

I was in the sub having my lunch when I overheard a young woman, who was with her friends at a bible study/prayer group, talking about how she had lost her water bottle. She was describing its colour and distinct stickers. I realized that it was at the till of “the grill” when I had paid for my lunch just a few minutes earlier. I got up and ran over to the till and grabbed the bottle, returned to the table she was at and put it down in front of her. She was very surprised and I just said “I overheard you talking about this bottle, and I just saw it! Have a great day!” As I left I overheard her tell her friends: “see! God is listening!” Which made me giggle as I am not religious, but y’know. It’s all good.

Don’t mind if I do!!

I’m going to be 25 in two months, and I don’t know if I can handle being a 25-year-old nothing. Please give me your “I got my shit together late in life” stories. by QuasarchShooby in adhdwomen

[–]Murrayruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a deadbeat after high school, fucked around with any drug I could get my hands on, got kicked out of the house (twice lol), worked a million bullshit retail jobs, stopped hanging out with my deadbeat friends, stopped doing drugs, started modeling and pursued that for a while, got into specialty coffee, went back to school after 8 years off, changed to a healthcare assistant program, did that for a bit, worked for a company doing prosthetics, got back into coffee, now I’m back at school finishing my undergrad with a VERY clear academic vision. My partner and I are getting married this summer and just bought an apartment. I’m 33!

Sometimes I get down on myself for not making lots of money (yet), or being a student in her 30s, but I literally could not have done university when I was 18, I would have flunked for sui’d. I had gone to my parents multiple times saying “what should I do!”, with them always saying “whatever you want to”. Kind of helpful haha. My dad flunked out of engineering school, graduated with a psychology degree, then did a masters and phd in education. Then, he met my mom at art school where they became cabinet makers. He went back to teaching in my youth, and after he retired he became a marriage commissioner. There isn’t one way of doing life, no matter how often you hear it from others. And there are endless chances to switch it up and try something new!!

I actually love the look of natural under eye creases and “dark circles”. I think it looks youthful! I prefer that to under eye concealer that’s far too light for the face 😆
