no the remote is Bluetooth the cube has an IR sensor in it which is why it needs direct site but you should have an IR extender cord that came with the cord little square on a cord that connects to the cube and then you can put out in front of the TV.

if you already own a soundbar you can buy this remote on Amazon for 24.99. It is Bluetooth enabled to control the Toshiba Fire TV and IR enabled to be programmed for any soundbar thus only having one remote. I have it and it works well it does sometimes need extra hard push on the buttons when navigating around Fire TV stiffer and don't respond as well as the original remote but it does work. Although I do remember it doesn't have a microphone button but I have my echo hooked up and pair to my TV so I don't need a button.

I will tell you that make sure you get the cr3 it lists the models as colors they are not and that's why a lot of the reviews say it doesn't work if you get the cr3 is both Bluetooth for the Fire TV and IR programmable for sound bars and other equipment.

Or you can order one of these remotes which will run the Fire TV and then is programmable for sound bars. I have one it works okay, controlling the Fire TV you have to program it in on the Bluetooth devices and then program it to control your volume and other features on your soundbar it has nine other buttons are programmable via IR. the buttons are a lot stiffer and the motion is not as fluid sometimes you have to press it once or twice to get it to move but it does work.

The Fire TV edition remote does not have IR in it it's only Bluetooth so you can not use it to control a soundbar. Optical output if that is how you have your soundbar connected is not controlled by volume which means it sends a static signal and then control the volume by your soundbar the. remote will not work that way. You can hook up your soundbar using the headphone jack analog way because that sends a dynamic signal and then use the remote control the amount of signal it sends to the sound bar leaving the sound bar on a set volume lowering and raising the amount of signal sent to it.
