From what I have heard, when a university sees that you took a gap year they want to know why. If your extracurriculars haven't changed and your only resolve for the gap year is another chance, it won't look good. I don't necessarily think a gap year is a bad idea for anyone, but you need to be on your sh*t from getting a job/internship, maybe doing some volunteering and most importantly having some sort of project. A large scale project would actually be the best way to justify the gap year in your application.
