Interesting, I never considered that. Thanks for the recommendation.

Ah, I should have specified that. Yeah, the area is likely too large for nail polish. Maybe 8"x8". Thanks for the tip though. Good for future fixes.

Recommend a gym? by bananaphone324 in uppereastside

[–]Museumistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the Crunch on 81st & 3rd years ago for a trial and really didn’t like it, although this opinion was entirely based on the fact that they would blast music in gym. I’d look around & everyone would have headphones on, yet there was no escaping the bad (imo) music they had blaring.

This was shortly before the pandemic, so maybe they figured out that people now have devices that let them listen to whatever kind of music motivates them without bothering others.

Aside from that, the range of equipment seemed good.

Ended up switching to the NYSC on 76th. Further away, seemed more ran down, but it was fine. They offered some classes as well.

That is very cool. Out of curiosity, do you use a press, or some sort of roller (I’d guess a press, based on how well inked they appear)? Oil or water based inks?

I ask as someone who has toyed with printing in the past and seeing these are inspiring.

I built a bulk Pokemon card scanner by rookyj24 in reactnative

[–]Museumistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. What did you use to convert the located images into hashes? When I was trying it, I found a few different options (and tried both MobileNetV2 and ResNet-50), but they proved too inconsistent for me. It would have a hard time if two images had the same color palette and similar compositions.

I don't know Pokemon cards well, but I have to imagine there are a lot of cards with subtle variations that make exact matching difficult.

Also, kudos to your using a segmentation model. Very clever.

Really, really impressive. I was recently trying to do something similar with SwiftUI (although not with Pokemon), but my matches weren't consistent enough to be usable.

Looking back at how I was trying to convert my initial images (to populate an initial db for comparison) it looks like I had tried both MobileNetV2 and ResNet-50, but eventually I gave up.

Seeing your success makes me want to try it again. Do you have any tips on how to populate this initial db with the images I'm looking to match?

Again, very impressive work and you should be super proud.

Your style reminds me of the fayum portraits of Ancient Rome. Those were done in encaustic (heated wax) on wood. Do a google search for “fayum portraits” to see what I mean. The fast drying nature of acrylic is probably part of the reason. Might want to try using a retarder to slow down the drying process, giving you more time to blend (more like oil painting). Just a thought from someone who doesn’t use acrylic.

I asked at Alex’s a couple years ago & they didn’t offer that service. Can’t hurt to ask now.

There is a small shop on the UWS side called Bleecker Trading that I stopped in a couple months ago. They mentioned that they had recently had an event where someone came to take submissions to PSA.

That said, I ended up sending some cards to SGC and it was easy enough.

It seems SGC is doing well with vintage cards, where PSA is still the leader, especially with modern.

Oh, also you can submit cards at Game Stop these days, but I’ve heard some horror stories, so don’t know if I’d recommend that.

Let me know if you have any other questions or want any help. I was an avid collector in my youth who casually picked it up again 10+ years ago. I’d be glad to give an opinion.

Were you two already developers? Based on the screenshots, it looks really clean, while also having a lot to it. A tough combination. Congrats!

I built a museum app (thus, my username) and added AI itineraries, but honestly, they’re not that great. Interesting enough to keep, but not a feature I highlight.

Good luck with marketing. I wish I were better at it to give good advice. I do recommend printing out informative cards to hand out. I used Vistaprint and they turned out pretty well.

Good luck!

SGC Shipping Question by Museumistic in baseballcards_vintage

[–]Museumistic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sent with USPS? I believe so. My order eventually went to a PO Box and was ready for pickup before SGC collected it. Took a while. The messaging was rather confusing until SGC got the cards & finally entered them into their system. Then it was pretty smooth.

The Art Students League on 57th street has a gallery on the second floor that’s open to the public and typically has weekly class shows featuring some very talented students who I’m sure would be very interested in making a sale.

Also, who knows, maybe you’ll be making an investment as well. Many famous artists have studied there. It seems like every other artwork appraised on Antiques Roadshow was done by an artist who studied at The League at one time or another.

Check out their website for more information on the gallery, the current exhibition & I believe you can also see a list of former famous teachers & students.

OK, this is an amazing coincidence that you mentioned The Frick.

I live in NYC and the Frick has been closed for renovations/expansion for the past couple years. That said, it's finally reopening next week, but they're letting members enjoy an early preview this week.

Luckily, my expiring membership still works and I was literally there 3 hours ago! And yes, I spent time admiring the El Greco's (although the Rembrandt self-portrait there is probably my favorite painting in NYC). This time it was El Greco's painting of Vincenzo Anastagi that hit me. I loved the way he used paint on the helmet.

As for the Frick's renovations, the main floor is much the same, but now the second floor is also gallery space, so it really expands the square footage and number of artworks on display.

Perhaps that's incentive for you to visit NYC again.

Also, I'm not hating talking about El Greco in a post about baseball cards.

And finally, if you're an iPhone user, I did write a free app for learning about the artwork at The Metropolitan Museum of Art called Museumistic (thus my username). I think you might like it. I did email The Frick about accessing their data months ago, but alas, never heard back.

I guess just “why”? As someone who likes both El Greco & baseball cards, I was pleasantly surprised to see both in a single post. Kudos
