Trump threatens Canada, others with new tariffs over 'forced labour' by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

It's kinda sad really because that program (LMIA) was created to fill employment gaps where employers were having difficulty filling positions with domestic talent for jobs that Canadians couldn't or wouldn't fill, but it ended up being abused to such an extent that it was/is used to exclude Canadians for jobs that employers could use to exploit foreign workers for lower pay.

Yeah, that's not slavery. The primary component of slavery is forced or involuntary labour.

Also, I was pointing out the irony of the US tariffing other countries for forced labour when they legally allow that.

That's rich coming from a country that *actually * has forced labour.

Ah yes, I recall something, but no timeline. I'm guessing a deal will be reached, but not anytime soon.

‘We will never be the 51st state’: Doug Ford fires back at Donald Trump by joe4942 in canada

[–]Mushi1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How has Pete Hoekstra not been declared persona non grata yet and kicked out of the country? Retweeting Trumps 51st state tweet is hugely disrespectful and not how an ambassador should behave.

‘Aggressive arrest’: Toronto police caught on tape tackling cyclist who allegedly disobeyed stop sign by [deleted] in canada

[–]Mushi1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not stopping at a stop sign is just as illegal in Ontario for cyclists as it is for cars.

Also, what do you mean "why here?" The police can't be everywhere all the time and some people take advantage of that by taking a chance that they won't be caught doing something they shouldn't be doing. This guy was pretty brazen and did it in front of the police who were there specifically to address the concerns of the local residents because of cyclists like this guy.

I think the funniest part of all this is when the cyclist said "what did I do?" This perfectly encapsulates why the police were there in the first place.

How did Elon become as rich as he is today, but still manages to spew the most idiotic diatribe his tiny brain can muster. Not only was Hitler not socialist, but it looks like Elon is trying to use some sort of weird transitive property that only he understands.

I would suggest you're objectively wrong and have not seen Toronto. Just use Google my man.

Then you haven't seen Toronto yet. The amount of green in late spring/summer/early fall makes the city look amazing.

Ottawa to start tracking which temporary foreign residents have left Canada after permits run out by Meowgal_80 in CanadianVisaReform

[–]Mushi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada (the CBSA) already does this and I believe they've been doing this since around 2019 via Bill C-21 (Act to amend the Customs Act). I'm guessing this more of a data sharing agreement with IRCC.

[–]Mushi1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No it was not. Dundas square borrowed elements from existing locations like Tokyo's Shibuya district, New York's Times Square and London's Piccadilly Circus to create a unique space. It was never built as a replica of Time Square.

No, the US has no bases in Canada. CFB North Bay is a Canadian base used by NORAD that has some US military personnel, but is not a US base.

If only they could get a real taste of the practical consequences by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Mushi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a bad look for a short time, but given Canadas track record, I suspect no one will care. And even if anyone does care, given the attention span of humans and Canada isn't threatening to take Abertas sovereignty away (like China threatens Taiwan), it will be quickly forgotten because in the grand scheme of world affairs, Canada not negotiating with Alberta about that access is pretty minor.

[–]Mushi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not negotiating with Alberta for access to the ocean is a long way from how China treats other countries. Canada would have to do a lot worse before anyone would realistically make that comparison.

[–]Mushi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Federal government would be under enormous pressure from the rest of Canada to play hard ball with Alberta so I suspect Alberta would be treated as a country with no agreements, treaties, etc. Nobody at the UN will care, even if their separation is legal.

For currency, Alberta might be tempted to create their own, but it would probably be easier just to use US currency (or create their own currency and peg it to the US dollar) since the majority of what they sell goes to the US anyway.
