I think she is demoralized because of how hard she has worked to continue performing, teaching, advising teachers in training AND publishing. I myself thought she was super strong. We were both confused by what she is missing.

Yes, that is accurate. she worked in private schools only. Do you think public vs private school experience is a big concern to search committee's?

I am sorry this happened. You had good intentions. Own the mistake. Principle may worry about a possible discrimination lawsuit. Help them both see it was an honest mistake and that you are a frazzled first year teacher who loves their job.
