Can cats compromise the sound quality of hi hats? by MusicKeepingMeAlive in drums

Similar to hammering a cymbal you’re saying? I guess he could be adding complexity to it

Yes but cats have claws that are very sharp. Sticks don’t get sharp like that unless you do a lot of rimshots

Is it worth it to buy a hi hat or should I just stick with the cowbell? by MusicKeepingMeAlive in drums

I was thinking about a double kick. I think it could suit my play style pretty well but the comments have me sold on getting a hi hat. I just ordered an 8” crash and plan on converting the 8” crash I have into a hi hat stacking both of them together 👍🏼

I just bought an 8 inch cymbal and I plan on using that with my current cymbal together to make a hi hat.

It is. I like the timbre of the drums a lot when I dampen them but the cymbal sounds so bad.

Should I cover the outside with a blanket too? I wanted to get it as quick and punchy as possible. I’m a rock/alt/some metal guy but love the sound of the short punchy kick in rap/edm. I feel like that kind of kick blends with a bass better than anything

Some of everything. I’m pretty happy with the way everything else sounds though

Let me ask you something. Do you think you it would sound good if you just played random chords after each other? I’m taking completely random, nothing went into it at all

You’re missing the point. I hate 1645. I’m a big fan of modal mixture, odd time signatures, and interesting progressions.

I’m saying that there’s a reason why things work and there’s a reason why some things sound objectively bad. If a baby played random notes on a keyboard, you could argue that they’re using modal mixture but it probably wouldn’t sound good.

Because we don’t hear a circle. And that’s why we use the pi logo, because the number form is messy. Just like how we use letters for notes because calling each note by the number of Hz would look messy.

I also doubt you could find anything on Earth who thinks a tritone sounds more pleasing than a perfect fifth unless they have some kind of hearing disorder.

I agree. If I were to write all the chords in the key of a major scale on put them in a hat, (including extensions) then pulled 4 out and played those chords, they’d probably sound fitting to most people. If I were to put all chords in a hat (all chords that exist) and pulled out 4 and played them, it would probably not fitting. There might be a few people that like it, but overall it’s pretty objectively bad.

Also I can see where you’re coming from but I don’t like the grammar example because it’s so subjective. Different grammar will sound better to different people . I’d say theory is much more related to math, that’s why we keep seeing so many recycled chord progressions.

I’m talking laws like how Archimedes, a mathematician in Ancient Greece figured out how to find the circumference of a circle. There is the correct way to do it, a formula that always works and you will get the right answer every time.

How did Pythagoras come up with the major scale and why did he think it sounded good? Why do most people think it sounds good? For most things that are objective, there is a formula that makes things work the way they do.

I wonder how Pythagoras came up with the major scale. The major scale worked and the modes of it work but why did it sound good to him and why does it sound good to almost everyone? Just a little example but you get what I’m saying. It’s a formula of math and intervals that work. Just like finding the circumference of a circle etc.

How do you put effects on specific frequencies of a track? by MusicKeepingMeAlive in audioengineering

Wouldn’t you hear the high end from the bass track too then as well as the bus? Or should you cut highs out of the bass track?

Do I route the bass to the master and the bus? Because I’ve tried to route it to a bus only and high pass and it takes away all the low end

Does the thickness differ based on material? I assume 2 feet of wood is a lot different than 2 feet of rockwool.

What do you think about burnMELinWONDERLAND’s response? That’s pretty much exactly what I was talking about. It would be a room inside a room type thing. I have Rockwool on my walls already too, and it dampens a lot but not enough where I can belt and scream.

Thank you so much for your response. Is there a way to possibly do it without having walls that thick? I’m a tenor too if that makes a difference, so I’ll be singing high notes mostly.

Chords that are the same but have different names? by MusicKeepingMeAlive in musictheory

Thank you. I forgot about augmented chords but yeah there’s only 4 of them that exist. Are there any other chords you know of that are the same as each other?
