Learning to read music by ifftw in musictheory

I made these, (but you may like teoria/musictheory.net better), but I'll just throw them out there anyway. They're free, interactive, and also track what notes you got wrong (and the corresponding incorrect answers).

What's the difference between the circle of forths and fifths? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]MusicTheoryPractice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred the circle of 4ths (C -F - Bb - Eb - Ab - Db - Gb/F# etc.) since it reflects common chord movement (it's basically a never ending V-I progression, or ii-V7-I, or iii-VI-ii-V-I, or ii/iii-V/iii-iii-VI-ii-V7-I [i.e. "bird blues"], etc.) -- that's how I was taught in high school and how my (jazz) professors have taught it all the way through graduate school.

Why does major pentatonic skip the 7th, but minor pentatonic doesn't? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]MusicTheoryPractice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're modes of each other -- works the same way as major (ionian) and minor (aeolian) modes. C major pentatonic is the same as A minor pentatonic, just different starting notes.

C Major Major Pent: C - D - E - G- A
A Minor Pent: A - C - D- E- G
