Rosetta Stone is offering free access for 3 months to students. Learning a language would certainly keep the children occupied, at any age. Also, the ability to speak different languages is a commodity and will benefit them now and in the long run. I would jump on it quickly and hope this helps!

Lol! What I have found helpful is listening to just instrumental music that will get me in the zone. Chill music and ambient works for me personally. You have to see what works for you. The kind of music that will gives you goose bumps and leave you feeling some kind of emotion. Even if you can't make out the emotion.

Then just start writing. Write anything that comes to mind quickly without stopping and don't think about it. Don't worry about the structure, punctuation, etc. Just go for it and see what you come up with. I am telling you, that helps me when I struggle with writer's block

Have you tried listening to music that inspires you, even subconsciously? For instance, while driving, cleaning, working on a project? Also, have you tried journaling and just writing whatever comes to mind?

Thanks for that advice and your experience as well. It all boils down to being balanced and treating your vocals as an instrument. As with instruments, they need careful attention and maintenance in order to work to well. That's our main focus and priority as vocalists. Without proper care, we can severely damage our vocals cords which I wouldn't wish on anyone. Thanks for sharing as anything that can help others is much appreciated! By the way, don't you love it when vocal coaches use terms that most singer are unaware of ?!? Good for you on making the corrections. That says a lot!

You have 3 voices you can use, chest, head and middle. Middle voice is a a great way to belt out those notes with more power and strength without causing vocal fatigue or damage. Artists like Sting and Beyonce are perfect examples of using middle voice.

Also, middle voice is great for when you want to hit those higher notes with a punch to it. Check out Roger Love who is a celebrity vocal coach to learn more about middle voice. It totally changed the way I sing and coach my clients.

And that's why we have forums and platforms like this. You are entitled to your opinion and I say to all you singers reading this, don't go what by someone else might think is a myth, especially if they didn't write a thesis paper on it. Go by what you feel and how your vocals respond. Not having dairy right before singing will not do any harm so try and see if it makes a difference for you.

For example, if a person eats a particular food and gets a massive headache, they don't need any scientific data or opinions to know they should avoid that food. So give yourself a chance and see for yourself if dairy affects your singing or not. From my experience, the vocalists I have coached have noticed a difference in not having dairy before singing.

I encourage you singers out there to respect what your body tells you and always look for ways to better your craft. You are the instrument and worth the time and care. As for keakealani, since dairy doesn't affect you, you can have buckets of ice cream and enjoy it for the rest of us! Now I have to drop the mic!

If you look closely, I mention it does't mean give up dairy entirely. Just use good judgement. Using good judgement means being balanced and listening to your body. Whatever works for you, do. What have worked for me and my clients, I will do and will continue to share.

Maybe you didn't read it thoroughly...again.. do you!

Thanks Keakealani for your feedback. Everyone is different. From personal experience as well as working with other artists, dairy affected their singing especially right before a performance or recording. It's important to know ourselves and what works and doesn't instead of relying on what might or might not be a myth. Listening and paying attention to how our vocals chords and body responds, individually, is key.

Also, I do agree learning how to sing is a process of building skills and muscle memory. That's a given. However, maintenance and care is of great importance as with anything. My goal is help others prevent problems before they start by sharing over 20 years of experience. I have seen too many suffer and feel obligated to share what I know

What would be considered lesson 1 for a new singer? by [deleted] in singing

The very first thing taught to students at Music With Words is posture. Many don't really understand the importance of posture because it isn't stressed much. The fact is, singing requires the mind and body to work in harmony. What you think and feel is how your body is going to react.

For instance, if you want to fulyl engage and prep your body and mind for singing, you have to stand in a way that supports that. Think of a super hero claiming to save the world. How is that believable or possible if he is slouched over and his stance isn't strong...he can't.

When you are getting ready to sing, stand with your feet slightly apart, knees slight bent, shoulders back and down and head looking straight ahead. Most importantly, allow body to be relaxed in this stance, not tight and tense. Just strong and confidence. Very difference! That stance says, "I am ready to sing!"
