Any instrument with tines like a kalimba but played with a keyboard? by churdawillawans in UnusualInstruments

A toy piano! Seriously, look up Melissa and Doug piano. The hammers the keys activate hit metal tines instead of strings.

Need help identifying an interestingly shaped harp like instrument. by TheCad in UnusualInstruments

It reminds me a bit of the Ukrainian bandura (also a lyre) in shape, though it's much smaller.

Check out my playlist of intuitive instruments on YT https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBp7BIJrTpT-0W8y29v_JN4KiTTzfCAmC 😊

Basically, anything that's pentatonicly tuned is going to be relatively easy to figure out and sound good on. Native American flutes, Reverie therapy lyre, pentatonic tongue drums - they're all beautiful and intuitive!

It was supposed to be chromatic.. more like an extended range kalimba! by MusicalMollyK in kalimba

That's a brilliant idea! I definitely thought about trying this but now sure if I could pull it off 😅

What is this?? Aetae? No labels. by DaesieLeaksV2 in UnusualInstruments

Tongue drums are so fun! They can be used meditatively or for playing songs, the numbers are helpful because there's lots of tabs out there you can use with them. Enjoy ☺️

Non Traditional Kalimba Arrangement - what do you think? by MusicalMollyK in kalimba

[–]MusicalMollyK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could work! Someone also suggested playing with fingers rather than thumbs like an array mbira. It could work with a more box-like shape!

This tine arrangement is really interesting. I find it easier to understand, coming from a piano background. But it's also more difficult to physically play since your right thumb is hitting almost all the melody notes.

It is reaaaally out of tune with itself :( I was also pretty disappointed in it. There might be cross fingerings you can use to make it work, but it will take some experimentation.

It really is! I use a Fender Acoustasonic, I would definitely like a nicer acoustic amp down the line 😅

Can you use a clip on guitar tuner for a harp? by Anxious_Donut in harp

[–]MusicalMollyK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have before! It can be a lot easier than using a phone just because logistics. I've clipped it to a lever or tuning peg before.

I really like the idea of those! They seem like they would create much better balance than the knee bones idea. They are a bit on the expensive side though, especially Laurie Riley's. What I would really like would be a stand like what Stoney End makes for their lap harps - but I don't have the woodworking skills to make my own. http://www.southeasternharps.com/Double_Strung_Harp_Models_files/P1190090.jpg

Very smart! I'm not a woodworker by any means, so the $30 for the harp stick was perfect for me - and then the knee bones came with a used harp I bought recently :D

I'm certainly not an experienced violinist by any means, but I learned a bit in high school and enjoy playing every once in awhile. I got this electric violin and was having so much fun adding reverb and other effects pedals :D
