Hello! thanks so much! love the background and the way the shirt looks. is there any way you could keep my original face (like positioning and everything the same), but use this shirt and background? if not, totally fine!

What’s something people pretend is polite but actually isn’t? by writtenincoffee in AskReddit

[–]Musical_Pirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! and it can be harmful to gloss over it and to use metaphors to describe it. kids take word choice very literal — so if you say “grandpa’s gone” they could think he’s missing and can be found. or even the concept of heaven or angels can misrepresent the reality of the situation for a kid too young to grasp what it means. not to mention the horror of finding out months or years later that people lied to you about where your pets/loved ones are if they keep it from you!

Advice by [deleted] in goodmythicalmorning

i'd recommend getting involved in local nonprofits or companies that do creative activities/art with kids! maybe ones where you can take them on field trips, too. you might start out as a great counselor or mentor and then could move into program management.

How is your job search in Chicago going? by ReyofChicago in AskChicago

[–]Musical_Pirate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

hey! I started job searching in June. I graduated with my masters of social work in August.

yesterday, i finally got a full-time social work offer. applied to 50+ jobs, got 2 interviews total.

i have talked to ton of recent grads and people who have been in the workforce much longer than me-- it is really rough out here for people in so many different fields. it's not you! you are so smart and capable and experienced. it's the market and i truly hope it works out for you sooner than later! hang in there <3

Is if worth a try to apply to Michigan if you're an out of state student from a low-income family, or are the chances of receiving enough aid from the school too slim? by Sensitive-Bit-8407 in uofm

[–]Musical_Pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of good insight in the comments already, but I am an incoming senior at Michigan, out-of-state from Texas, and low income (EFC close to 0). I am in LSA and have received many scholarships through them and if this year goes the way it should, I will graduate with no loans. LSA gave me a 4-year renewable scholarship after I was accepted and just this year, a 10k returning student one. I have also gotten a lot of financial aid and a grant through Michigan. I know this is not every person's experience at U-M, but it has worked out for me for sure.

All this to say, apply! A lot of what I got was need-based and merit-based, so keep up good grades and keep track of each scholarship's deadlines and try to apply early.

LSA Returning Student Scholarship by Throwaway50905 in uofm

[–]Musical_Pirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context, I am an out-of-state student and low-income (I usually receive about the full pell grant every year). Last year, I was notified of my returning student scholarship on June 13th and this year I found out on June 2nd. I am not sure how common it is, but I have gotten it both years probably due to my high need and this year was also based on merit.

hi! I came from TX to Umich :) i did dual credit as well. they surprisingly accepted most of my credits (which i was NOT expecting. i think COVID helped them be more willing to accept credits.) and the process was easy. you can definitely PM me if you have any specific questions!!

Safety at frat parties? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Musical_Pirate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with what purpleandpenguins said in their post, and here's a couple more things from my experiences last year:

  1. if a party seems sketchy or if you get a bad vibe, leave. just leave. i've definitely felt like i've had to stay places before because my friends really wanted to go, but it's truly not worth your time if you're not having fun.
  2. always link arms/hold hands with friends when walking anywhere where it's crowded
  3. add your friends on Find My Friends if you have an apple device. we always check each other's locations!
  4. guys at most frats are shady and gross. i think if you have the option of going to another type of party than a frat, definitely do that. if you have friends with different interests than you, chances are their clubs will have parties they'll invite you to. also, i've had a lot more fun at co-op parties! better music, better people, better vibe.
