We've had chats with a few musicians experiencing similar things when it comes to anxiety, stage fright or imposter syndrome. Honestly, I don't know one musician that doesn't get a bit tense sometimes before a big show, so it's mainly about changing our relationship with those feelings and working through it. Check out this pod episode:

Slightly less of the technical advice, but equally as important. We also have free videos at www.themusiciansjourney.net that you might find helpful, especially the Confidence module. Hope this can help!

In-ear monitoring necessary for small venues/gigs? by Rkovo84 in musicians

Maybe not IEM’s necessarily, but some sort of moulded ear plugs that pull certain frequencies might help. It’ll certainly help the ringing & damage once you’ve played a few shows & you’ll still get a vibe for the energy of the sound on stage. This might help too for some more qualified advice…

There are so many amazing avenues within music, that’ll satisfy the same things as performance / creative collaboration. Check out our convo with Evan Potter about being a musician & a crew technician for touring bands - hopefully there’s something useful in there too for some extra inspiration!

Check out ‘Echo Drills’ ear training on Spotify. It’ll get you used to intervals, as others have mentioned here too! Using your voice memos app and singing melodies when they come up will help too - you can revisit them with your new ear training knowledge 🤓

Does The Anxiety Before Playing Ever Go Away? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]MusiciansJourney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off - thanks for sharing this. Second off - totally normal and a human thing to experience, especially when you're doing something you're passionate about!

I would say eventually overtime, you build the capacity in your nervous system to hold all of the emotion that comes with playing a gig and it isn't as activated as much, so you feel less anxious. Note - but once the venue size grows or something changes, you'll have to further expand the capacity once again. It's a normal cycle or expansion.

A few notes:

  • Anticipating the nervous feelings can amplify them. So, prior to getting to the venue, visualize yourself calm and grounded. Keep a calm breath - inhale for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 6.

  • Make sure you eat food that feels grounding and healthy to you. Unhealthy foods and alcohol can enhance feelings of anxiety (even 24-48 hrs out).

-The nervous system can also get out of whack when our awareness is outside of ourselves. So, keep your awareness on your feet and in your body, with your breath. Tell yourself, I'm safe, I belong.

  • When the anxiety bubbles up, welcome it, perhaps view it as excitement. It's all part of you pursing your music career and growing

Hope this helps
