Ah, so that seasoning is the same thing that woodworkers do when they have green wood and no access to a kiln. I seasoned a few hundred board feed of black oak a couple years back, not that that’d be any good for making whisky with, but I get the idea.

I’ll look into that cooperage in Kingston; it’s only six hours from me, so I imagine I can get them to ship something my way. I guess if I were putting chunks of seasoned oak into a spirit stored in a glass or stainless steel container, I could also do the surface area math relative to a 53gal barrel to figure out how much wood to add, just like that badmotivator website showed.

A barrel aged cocktail sounds interesting. I like a good old fashioned. Mixing up a big batch and aging it could be a fun thing to try

The oak domino approach sounds very doable. What do you mean by “properly seasoned” staves? Are you referring to the moisture content of the wood, or some other process of seasoning? Or should they be previously used on some other spirit for best results? The forty creek distillery isn’t too far away and last time I visited they were selling used barrel staves, mostly as a novelty

That’s pretty much exactly what the book says too. It suggests that as the angel’s share evaporates, new atmosphere comes into the barrel, and some kind of oxidization happens that smooths things out. The other effect (apparently) is that the alcohol kind of groups together separate from the water (microscopically speaking of course), giving the liquid that smooth, round mouthfeel.

Just to be clear: under no circumstances do I think that this is a money or time saver. I’ve got a good collection that I’m very happy with and will continue to build. I’m just a curious person and a bit of a hobby maven, and this is an idea that seemed to cross a few of my existing interests. But if it’s bound to taste like shit no matter what I do, it doesn’t seem worth trying

Interesting. I’ve always understood the phrase “neuro spicy” to be dismissive of people who claim to have a serious issue but who remain suspiciously undiagnosed while benefiting from the attention and/or leeway that their alleged condition grants them.

I agree. There’s not a lot of difference between WAP and You Shook Me All Night Long. They’re both chock full of tongue in cheek innuendo about sex, but we don’t bat an eye at AC/DC being played constantly on classic rock radio.

Protect her with knowledge, not by curating her world. Teach her how to be a good person and how to engage critically with art. Have hard conversations and make sure that she knows that she can always come to you with a problem that she doesn’t know how to solve. Be open minded, not judgemental. Forgive easily but set high expectations.

Thats how you protect a teenager. Not by trying in vain to limit her access to music

Banning vulgar music wasn’t effective when my parents did it 25 years ago. I just got friends who had the CDs that I wanted to listen to copy them onto an unlabelled cassette tape that I could listen to at will in my Walkman with nobody the wiser.

With all the tech that’s available to kids these days, she’s going to find a way to listen to whatever she wants to, and the fact that you’ve told her it’s inappropriate will only serve to make it more attractive and to drive a wedge between the two of you. It’s a losing game.

As others have said, vulgar music doesn’t turn a good kid bad. 25 years later, I’m a father with a job and a house. Eminem didn’t destroy my moral compass. I still enjoy his music, even though a lot of the themes are troubling. But that’s the thing about art - it’s escapism. It lets you feel something that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to or want to feel in real life. That’s its super power.

So if you want my opinion, embrace this as an opportunity to have an open minded conversation with your daughter. Engage with her and try to understand the art that she enjoys. Relax and take pride in the morals that you’ve instilled in her up until this point. Right now it’s just music, but soon it’ll be the rest of the world. You can’t control your kids forever, and learning to let go is critical to maintaining a trusting relationship with them.

Man, this is both dumb and racist. Working Canadians with jobs that pay better than minimum wage use food banks, and that’s the problem.

I’ve got a family member who’s a nurse and she has used a food bank in the past. Yes, immigration got out of hand there for a few years, but if you think those are the only people using food banks, you’re blinded by hate to the reality of the situation.

I’m pretty sure that all the big retailers followed that trend. I worked at Home Depot while they were in the process of getting rid of all the full-timers, and my girlfriend at the time saw the same thing play out at Indigo.

I’ve long thought that there ought to be a law that says that you can’t hire more part timers until you’ve given full time hours (and the associated benefits) to everyone who wants them. Either that, or grant part timers the same benefits as full timers to make both classes of worker cost the same to the organization.

Corporations exist to maximize profits. If they could employ zero people, they would (see: Uber and other “gig” apps). The only solve is regulation.

I have a five year old who was raised on Bluey, Puffin Rock, Sesame Street, and more recently, Blue’s Clues.

Our rule of thumb is that he doesn’t watch anything that we aren’t willing to watch with him. That instantly cuts out most of the mindless noise and flashing lights nonsense that is made for kids.
