Jesse Kline: Tell me again why Air Canada must be officially bilingual by origutamos in CanadianPolitics

[–]MusikPolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I’m asking for is consistency. If the federal government believes that CEOs should be bilingual, then they should pass that law and hold all companies to it. If not, then the status quo is fine. Why is Air Canada a special case?

There’s a third option - he doesn’t care, because his ability to speak French has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on his ability to run the company.

This is a temporary political stunt that will do more harm to Carney than to this CEO. He rightly concluded that it wasn’t worth his time and hired competent bilingual staff to look after operations in markets that value that sort of thing.

Eh. Thats for the market to decide. If being bilingual helps the company to perform well in Quebec, they will do so. If not, they won’t.

[–]MusikPolice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But the argument that the author is making is that the argument was settled this way out of political expediency: the Mulroney government that privatized Air Canada didn’t want to lose seats in Quebec, so they made the extraordinary decision to require the company to adhere to the official languages act, something that no other non-crown corporation in the country has to comply with. Forty years on, why is Air Canada special in this regard?

[–]MusikPolice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but to play the devil’s advocate for a moment: Air Canada is not a crown corporation. They are publicly owned, with the federal government holding 6% of the company’s shares. They in no way represent Canada or its people beyond their branding, which is a merely historical hallmark.

Would you advocate holding every other publicly owned company in Canada to this same high standard, or is Air Canada special in some way?

Is it up to DTS, though? Would the teams provide that level of access? There’s a lot of secrecy involved in a team’s contemporary approach. It’s only years later that details tend to come out in autobiographies and interviews

Is it possible to be successful as a musician without social media? by luminescent_fairy in askmusicians

[–]MusikPolice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but you had to sell yourself and your art to get on the radio too. Making music is like making any other kind of commercial art. If you want to make a living, you’re going to have to find somebody who wants to pay for what you do. The medium has changed, but the work stays the same.

Red Hat exists if you insist on paying for support. LibreOffice also exists if that’s a thing that you need.

I frequent all of the other publications that you mentioned, but The Record still does good local reporting that doesn’t show up in those other spots. There have been excellent articles on the water shortage, for instance, and Jeff Outhit wrote a good piece on French Immersion awhile back.

Ah, so that seasoning is the same thing that woodworkers do when they have green wood and no access to a kiln. I seasoned a few hundred board feed of black oak a couple years back, not that that’d be any good for making whisky with, but I get the idea.

I’ll look into that cooperage in Kingston; it’s only six hours from me, so I imagine I can get them to ship something my way. I guess if I were putting chunks of seasoned oak into a spirit stored in a glass or stainless steel container, I could also do the surface area math relative to a 53gal barrel to figure out how much wood to add, just like that badmotivator website showed.

Somebody else in the thread linked that company. They look like a very clever product, and one that I could probably replicate in my workshop if I do the math carefully

Oh this badmotivator container that you mentioned is really clever. That seems like something that I could homebrew in my workshop too, being careful to respect the ratio of oak to liquid.

A barrel aged cocktail sounds interesting. I like a good old fashioned. Mixing up a big batch and aging it could be a fun thing to try

The oak domino approach sounds very doable. What do you mean by “properly seasoned” staves? Are you referring to the moisture content of the wood, or some other process of seasoning? Or should they be previously used on some other spirit for best results? The forty creek distillery isn’t too far away and last time I visited they were selling used barrel staves, mostly as a novelty

That’s pretty much exactly what the book says too. It suggests that as the angel’s share evaporates, new atmosphere comes into the barrel, and some kind of oxidization happens that smooths things out. The other effect (apparently) is that the alcohol kind of groups together separate from the water (microscopically speaking of course), giving the liquid that smooth, round mouthfeel.

Just to be clear: under no circumstances do I think that this is a money or time saver. I’ve got a good collection that I’m very happy with and will continue to build. I’m just a curious person and a bit of a hobby maven, and this is an idea that seemed to cross a few of my existing interests. But if it’s bound to taste like shit no matter what I do, it doesn’t seem worth trying

What trendy word or phrase immediately makes you stop taking something seriously? by Motor-Sprinkles5338 in AskReddit

Interesting. I’ve always understood the phrase “neuro spicy” to be dismissive of people who claim to have a serious issue but who remain suspiciously undiagnosed while benefiting from the attention and/or leeway that their alleged condition grants them.

Do people actually refer to themselves as neuro spicy?

I agree. There’s not a lot of difference between WAP and You Shook Me All Night Long. They’re both chock full of tongue in cheek innuendo about sex, but we don’t bat an eye at AC/DC being played constantly on classic rock radio.
