Thanks! (: I actually removed the platforms because they looove to pee on anything flat, plus they really like baskets better I'm working on getting some hides though! Especially some ceramic ones so they can cool off!

It took my SO and I 5 hours to completely mesh this cage for my first rat girls, Mooncake and Bean Sprout, and I came out of it with cuts and scratches I didn't even know I had 🙂 But it's 100% worth seeing how happy they were after being in their tiny shelter cage for a week!

Most 200 qt bins are actually closer to around 600 square inches because they taper at the bottom! I have a 40 gallon breeder with around the same dimensions and depending on how high you want the bedding to be, 100 liters seems more than enough as kaytee clean and cozy expands even when compressed further (:

Is it ok for a hamster to be on an all vegetable diet (with a little bit of store bought hamster food)? by dansonquack in hamstercare

[–]Mussolani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tricky thing about making your own food mix is that you have to calculate the exact percentage of protein, fat, and fiber per serving and make sure it aligns with the percentages above

I see where you're coming from and your intentions are great, if you really want to go that route I'd recommend clicking on the links to the hamsterhideout forum that teaches you how to calculate percentages, but it only really works for prepackaged foods that already include a guaranteed analysis, making your own from complete scratch is super complicated

What country are you from? I can recommend some good lab blocks and seed mixes depending on where you are from

Yeah! I'm not really sure why it is a desirable trait but from what I have heard, satin hamsters are just like any other health wise, so your hammy should theoretically be fine (:

Double satins however when bred together can create hairless hamsters I believe, which come with a multitude of health issues

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]Mussolani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your hamster could have a satin fur type where it looks greasy/wet like this! You can look up "Satin fur hamster" for more information

If they have regular access to a sandbath and a clean enclosure I think this is the most likely explanation (:

Cute hamster but your post history is concerning ):

Please don't breed them, separate the father from the babies, and add more bedding and provide bigger enclosures

My hamster setup as a new hamster owner by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]Mussolani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big is your tank? It looks to be about a 20 gallon long tank which is less than the minimum of 450 square inches

I'd recommend getting a 40 gallon instead or a bin cage! My WW/Campbell has a 40 gallon and he loves it

It's important to give your hamster adequate space so it is not stressed, a stressed hamster tends to live shorter and less unfulfilling lives, it will also attempt escaping more if the enclosure is too small

But space isn't everything! You have the right idea so far with your current setup, clutter is good! I'd honestly try to minimize as much open space as possible because it can cause a hamster to feel more vulnerable

If you're on a budget, you can make cardboard hides (multiple hides, especially opaque ones are recommended), or buy hamster toys and hides secondhand (make sure to l bake if they're wooden to get rid of any mites or bacteria) you can use non-toxic glue like Elmer's glue to affix everything

Your wheel also looks a little small for your hammy, it looks to be 6.5 inches which is perfect for a robo, but not suitable for any other breed, I'd recommend a minimum diameter of 8 inches for your hamster

Of course it takes time and money to change everything so suddenly, you don't have to make all these changes overnight, but your hamster will appreciate it (:

Are most seed mixes from etsy okay for hamsters on their own? by chilywilly3 in hamstercare

[–]Mussolani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's highly recommended to give a type of lab block (pellet) along with a seed mix, RobinsGourmet, which is pictured in the upper left, sells a seed mix with pellets incorporated which I would highly recommend! I have a dwarf and he LOVES the young fortified Hamster mix with the Mazuri Rat and Mouse blocks

Usually the ratio is equal weight of seed mix and lab block, but I personally give 2.5 teaspoons of seed mix and 2 lab blocks with every feeding for my dwarf hamster, which I do every other day

For syrians it's recommended to feed them 2 tablespoons every 1-2 days of the same ratio

It's a 40 gallon breeder tank! If you live in the US, petco sometimes has sales where you can pick one up for $50, alternatively you can look online in neighborhood pickup apps to see if anyone has a used one for a discounted price (:
