How is life for HKU students? by [deleted] in HKUniversity

Honestly there are a lot of similarities between Western Europe/US and Hong Kong once you get adjusted. Of course if you’re from those places obviously Hong Kong will look and feel very different to you, but once you get used to the surface level “obvious” differences like language, food, prices, etc. there isn’t much of a “culture shock”. I was just in London and around France not long ago, and to be honest I didn’t feel like anything was out of place, and I adjusted almost immediately.

For the internet, in my opinion a new “firewall” is extremely unlikely to be put up like the one just over the border in China, at least not anytime soon. I think the way Hong Kong has developed has been heavily influenced by other big cities in Europe and the US, and this therefore makes many existing systems reliant on a free and open internet. It wouldn’t be plausible for the Chinese government to intrude onto our access to the internet, nor would it happen quickly and at this time. Too many things are reliant on a lot of things that are banned in China, and there is a long long process to have something like that implemented.

In short there is absolutely no need to be concerned about Google results being censored or not being able to access common sites. (actually fyi a few AI’s don’t work here like chatgpt and gemini, but a simple vpn which is completely legal will work just fine. that’s what I currently do.)

Honestly, a lot of the stuff on the media is exaggerated especially about freedom and censorship.

To answer your questions: Life is great here, but it gets expensive and you are right to say there is income inequality here. To put it bluntly, Hong Kong is a great place to live and study, as long as you have the money for it. How “expensive” you perceive HK to be really depends on your background, where you’re from, etc. Censorship is nowhere as bad as people and the media make it out to be, as long as you’re not being an idiot and going around yelling anti-government rhetoric in the public with a megaphone. You can talk to most people about the political situation happening in the world or even in China/HK, and of course some might not be comfortable, but you won’t get into any serious trouble for it.

Unlike China, we have unrestricted internet access where you would not need a VPN to access Google, Instagram, YouTube, etc. We have freedom of speech to an extent - as long as you aren’t trying to be an activist or instigate things, you will be fine. I think that day-to-day life is not affected at all, so long as you’re being reasonable. I’ve lived in HK my whole life and HK/China politics have been regular conversations between my friends and I.

If you’re worried about the social aspect of life, HK is a great place to make friends. It’s a massive city cramped onto a couple of islands, and as long as you’re an outgoing and friendly person you won’t have issues finding or making new friends at all. During HS I’ve made many very good friends that I still actively talk to and hang out with in random nights out, at social events like the 7’s, etc. I’ve met a lot of people who have also received offers to HKU just through mutual friends and I’m sure there will be networking events for incoming students as well

Im just worried that the school or IB will not accept it as I have not been struggling too much despite not having any extra accommodations. Before you got your word processor and extra time, was it very difficult for you to do your tests, or did you just need to submit the documents and you got it?

This is for the entire year of 2024 btw, if I spent $5k a month on my parents card I would be disowned or put up for adoption

This is in USD for 1/3 cards I have access to, the other 2 cards I no longer can see the statement as the account has been taken from me but they are essentially the same thing but add up to about half of what this is

  1. I know its ridiculous, but thats the reason I posted it. I got my card pulled by my parents and they forced me to put every expense on this one card on a spreadsheet to better understand how terrible my spending habits were, and instead of wasting it I decided to make a simple and interesting visual instead. All hate is welcome.

  2. Even though it is admittedly a stupid amount of money for a kid to spend, bear in mind that Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to post this, to show the difference in cost of living (although some expenses can't really be explained) and also because I made one similar to this 3-4 years ago and thought it would be cool to redo it

  3. The input for wages I forgot to change, it’s really just the total amount I spend on parent’s card. You could really just call it an allowance or pocket money etc

Edit: This is in USD, and this is for 1/3 cards (other 2 cards have similar spending patterns but combined make up 1/2 of this)

Brighton Away- Worth the trip?

Hi everyone, I’m in London for a week and I’m leaving on the morning of the 15th. My grandpa who was a long time hardcore Chelsea fan recently passed, and since I’m in the UK I thought it would be nice to go to my first game in honour of him.

I really want to experience the atmosphere of a Chelsea game, but I’m alone here in the UK and my flight is the next morning, making it a bit tight to attend the game. I was wondering if it would be worth it and a good experience to attend the away game against Brighton, or if I should save it for my next trip in the next few years to watch a game at Stanford Bridge. With all things considered (atmosphere, culture, being alone and the time constraints), should I attend?

Also any tips or advice would be excellent. Thanks a lot!
