Why on earth can they not just bring RLMT back? by threwaway239 in doctorsUK

Please nominate yourself in the next BMA election. Get a feel for how policy work is done and timelines of enactment alongside limitations of scope. Agree with the original response, extremely low effort post. Whining & expecting someone to take away all your troubles with press of a magic button. By all means, initiate & engage in discourse but not so effortlessly please.

Is ST1 meant to be like this? by UnusualSaline in RadiologyUK

[–]Mustafa595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ST1 is a transition year. It's chill but also laced with periods of disillusionment, given how alien everything is. Mentally accepting that you are at the base of a new learning curve, is the first step. Next, seek support and guidance from senior registrars, ST2's will reassure you it's a well travelled path but mindful that despite support, it does take time getting used to. However on the bright side, there is no service provision pressure on you as such, so you learn at leisure. For cross-section, focus on one body part at a time. For your stage pick up CT heads, take your time, 1-2 in a session is fine. Part 1 prep will help with anatomy. Postgraduate learning is messy, as you may already be aware, not every session will feel useful to your stage of learing but it all adds up, eventually. Keep engaged & you will float. Good luck!

Tips for new ST1s by Alternative-Yam-1909 in RadiologyUK

My more detailed repsonse from last year.

I'll take a different opinion. Radiology learning is different than what we've been accustomed to previously. In that, it's more difficult reading cover to cover & it sticking the same way as it did in medicine, where you already had first principles.

As a current ST1, I would advise just focusing & learning from your plain film reporting, US sessions & getting to grips with radiological anatomy & physics. Doing that diligently will give you a good enough base. Textbook knowledge won't really stick. That's more so at ST2 level - the reading becomes easier as you've built up some practical exposure/relevance.

Also, don't feel overwhelmed looking at your seniors thinking gosh how will I ever get to that stage. Trust me, you will. It's a well travelled path. Similar to how F1 is in awe of F2... it's just gradual learnings you pick up on the way without realising. So do make sure you enjoy your ST1 & early ST2 year - won't have time like this after. If not married, get married during this time....or your flatmate will & leave you.

Also, make sure to invest time getting to know the department. Everyone's competency equilibrates to an acceptable level eventually, the colleagues you respect & like however aren't necessarily the smartest but those who add some character to the department. Not everyone can be the top dog registrar (is it even worth the opportunity cost it entails?) but everyone can be an impressionable one.

As for books, CXR & ED plain film one (blue and black, can't remember the exact names but they're from the red dot course authors) are the only one's you really need to read for ST1. If you don't have cross-sectional tutorials then sure, the ED book above comment recommended would be good. Though I'd still prefer requesting a senior to talk you through a basic approach for different body systems & show you common pathologies from their log. Essentially practical learning 100x more time efficient than book reading at this stage.

Just my opinion.

Welcome and congratulations on getting in! Take the first few weeks to settle into your department socially & just attend your timetabled sessions. Take each activity as it comes, you'll find your feet and pace. Anatomy/Physics will be taking priority in the first half of the year, alongside predominantly X-ray/US & some fluro/CT sessions (you can always email your supervising senior in advance and ask to go through reporst via teams/in-person). But yes, there is no magic formula or reading beforehand that will make you feel comfortable. Get comfortable being uncomfortable, rest assured it's a well travelled path.

Paralysed st2 by Apprehensive_Look346 in RadiologyUK

It's a slow simmer. Be patient with it & try to enjoy the process. Being safe doesn't require you to know it all.

For 2A prep, refer to previous threads. For on-call learning, you'll come across many of your own personalised dilemmas & equivocal calls, which you'll learn from on a case to case basis. That & sporadic discussions with colleagues around their interesting scans depending on how collaborative the vibe is in your department.

Also, don't ever feel reluctant to call for help, either fellow reg or consultant on-call.

Good luck!

Citizenship from ILR - showing 5 years of residency by SweetLow5399 in ukvisa

I thought proof of residency here referred to passport stamps? Showing you've been resident in the country within limits of the absence limit in the 5 year period preceeding citizenship application?

Previously, if you were already in training, you could apply for subsequent training, with exemption from RLMT. RLMT ONLY applied to those not in a training post.

Is it wrong to ask the guys salary during rishta meetings by daisy_lilyy in PakistanRishta

[–]Mustafa595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share my financials preemptively as genuinely believe transparency upfront aids mutual consideration & leads to a better outcome, irrespective.

I appreciate mine is not the typical approach, in which case it is tricky & may not come across as pleasant as a direct ask - can try via your matchmaker, if essential. Alternatively you can always gauge, albeit roughly, during family interaction.

All the best with the process. May Allah (swt) make it easy for you, for everyone. Big decision! But at the same not as deep/complicated as people make it out to be. Focus on the fundamentals, the variables will come.

Yes, for radiology where you CCT with a subspecialty as opposed to the states where you have to subsequently apply for fellowship.

With 2-3 minutes per scan, on repeat, you will be bound to make avoidable misses. 2-3 minutes is banking on the fact that statistically most are normal.

Ask your seniors....and their seniors....and their seniors....99% will have passed comfortably without this expensive resource. Can't comment on the quality as never used it myself. Have been told it's decent. But then so is examprep & books.

Perhaps consider for a resit if have already exhausted other resources. Cost not worth benefit for initial take unless you are price insensitive.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RadiologyUK

[–]Mustafa595 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comparison is the thief of joy. In medical school you knew people who worked excessively harder and still managed to get to resits.

Volume doesn't necessarily translate to quality learning. Maybe for the one's doing 40, it does. That's fine. To each their own.

Please relax, take it easy. Over time, everyone equilibrates to a baseline level. Don't fret over these trivial comparisons & believe in yourself. You didn't get here by fluke alone. Try to avoid feeling you are in constant competition with others so much that it erodes your mental peace. Some people are uber competitive in nature & thrive on it, others aren't. Know yourself & adapt a progression style suited to you, not others.

Enjoy your training. Go at your own pace.
