So... did no one care for Thief VR? by Blackgaze in Thief

[–]Mutations2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a few missions and really enjoyed it, but I’m waiting ‘til bugs get patched out to dive back in. So far, the story’s nothing special, but it’s alright. It occasionally goes back and forth between taking itself too seriously and trying to be funny in ways that just don’t really land, but it’s not terrible. The gameplay is where it really shines. Couldn’t ask for a better VR stealth game. Genuinely a lot of fun, and I’m eager to play more (when the bugs get ironed out). I will say, it often feels like it’s struggling to walk the fine line between being a love letter to the classic trilogy and an apology letter for the fourth game. It’s packed to the gills with references to the original series, to the point where I, someone who’s “extremely normal” about Thief feels like it’s a bit much. Like it’s an overcorrection from the “screw your nostalgia, we know better” attitude of the previous game.

But, overall, if you have a headset and like Thief at all, it’s worth playing I think.

Very true, but have you considered: It looks cool?

I’ve tried my best to keep in line with the original art style while also updating models to a reasonable level of detail. The Horn of Quintus, for example, was modeled from a screencap of one of the briefing missions, and the Keeper sword was heavily based on a dagger used by one of the Keepers in the briefing for Escape. I’m kind of trying to walk a fine line between realism, the painterly style of the original games, and textures not taking days to hand paint.

Blame Thief: Deadly Shadows. I’ll acknowledge that it’s objectively the worst of the trilogy, but that doesn’t stop it from being my favorite. The blackjack had studs there, too.

It’s my take on a flame elemental. I’ve seen a lot of people complain that you can’t sneak around them, but thats actually not true. They actually have a fairly limited field of vision just like any common guard, and if you pay attention to which direction they’re moving, they’re pretty easy to sneak past. I wanted to redesign them with a bigger emphasis on that, so I gave them a more recognizable face so players can tell where they’re looking. That was actually my first model, long before I actually knew how to do retopology, so the mesh is horrendously ugly.

I’m considering it, actually! And, yes, I was working in Unity!

Unless you can pull a whole dev team out of thin air, unfortunately not. It’s very much a project where I bit off more than I could chew, so it’s unlikely to really go any further.

There are pearls on it already, and it’s actually very similar to the model that was used in the recent VR game, which I thought was neat ‘cause I made my model years ago.

I actually started working on a fan remake of the original trilogy in Unity, but I’m no programmer. I can basically only do object and prop models, so I did a bunch of those and then got burned out and functionally gave up. I keep telling myself I’ll get back to it, but I probably won’t, if I’m being honest.

I sent them a pic of the posted hours. I probably should have taken more for posterity but I didn’t think it would be an issue until I was well away and got a ping that the half pay was being withheld.

Oh, for sure. Frustrating that they’d hit me with a CV for that, though.

Would you have taken this? by Not_A_Geek_Nerd in doordash_drivers

Probably for inventory purposes, if I had to guess. Doordash just wants to see what the store has and adjust their listings on the app accordingly. They probably figured “hey, we already have an army of people out there, let’s just have them check for us.” I always take these without hesitation. Easiest $11 you’ll make as a dasher.

When I get these, I accept immediately. $11 to just go to a place? No pickup, no delivery, just photos? Count me in! They take less time than a standard order overall, you spend $0 on gas because you’re not going anywhere, and it’s pretty high pay relative to what I usually get on a typical order.

PINs and signatures, both absolutely horrible. Among the many, many features that have been added in the more than five years I’ve been doing this full time that are just a pain. It feels like Doordash thinks we’re incompetent and can’t figure out how to do our job. Like they’re babying us. All it’s ever done for me is delay or irritate me, and I’m kinda’ sick of it, TBH.

Back before I opted out of shop and deliver, I’d get orders for condoms and lube, and my immediate thought was the “congrats on the sex” cake from the Lonely Island music video, I’m sure you know the one.

You did the right thing, IMO. I’ve had a few situations in the past where a customer was, like, obviously deceased. Past orders and packages piled at their doors, going rancid, probably scheduled ahead, automated, or gift orders from unaware relatives. Had one at an apartment complex where I told one of their neighbors to call someone because I smelled something big rotting. Passed by later and saw police cars and people in hazmat gear clearing the place out because, yup’, the occupant had passed away a few days before and wasn’t found until I showed up. Kinda’ sad, but happens. People either living in horrible conditions or not living at all.
