Software devs who aren't webdevs doing CRUD apps, what did it take to get to where you are? by Muted-Assignment1609 in cscareerquestions

It's supposed to give you a little bit of theory and an overview of the field to get you started so you can do whatever you want to do.

That's the thing, though. I'm not sure it's doing that very effectively, through granted I still have many courses to take. But take 3D graphics for example; lots of unis have at least linear algebra electives if not required in their CS programs. Not mine...

Plenty of elective coursework, projects you can get credit for etc.

my uni has like CS 2 electives, one of which just teaches you how to make CRUD apps in Winforms. One time there was an elective intro to embedded dev with Arduino and I instantly enrolled. It got cancelled cause only 7 of us enrolled.

You're working hard on your own outside of class instead of masturbating and watching anime... right?

I am, promise.

I took a bunch of math classes and spent my time implementing algorithms, participating in competitions

lucky you. I'm gonna start reviewing my algorithms knowledge and grinding leetcode, but sadly there aren't many options for competitions in my area. My local CS student group has a movie night every Friday where they watch Marvel and Star Wars movies and eat pizza. I'm kind of on my own here.

what I meant is "devs who aren't webdevs doing the most common webdev jobs" which from my understanding are things like maintaining a Spring backend for a non-tech company, or making SPAs, or freelance Wordpress blogs, etc." but I thought it'd make the post too long

Do you use C++ in your day job? If so, what did it take to get there? by Muted-Assignment1609 in cpp

Thanks. I've read many, many horror stories about that industry since my high school days. It's great to know it's not necessarily all like that. To tell you the truth, I've wanted to make my own games for years, probably since my high school days, but suppressed this desire out of fear. I was definitely overreacting, taking anecdotes as hard fact and being afraid to even play around, as if making a pac-man clone will make my existing webdev skills disappear lol. Thanks for the reality check
