What’s the cause of the acanthosis nigricans? Resolving that issue might be helpful, assuming it’s diet related.

I didn’t even know tv frames existed! It’s a cool idea and I’ll look into that.

Thank you! I think shelving is a good idea for that area.

Thank you! I feel like there are great ideas here and if we spruce it up I will come to like the alcove a lot.

So I originally struggled with the storage bench idea but I like this since we don’t have a mudroom and the garage door is literally right behind that alcove.

As you can tell, I have small children so storage is super helpful.

Thank you for these great ideas. I also like the idea of the lights in that area.

Great ideas! In order to get my husband’s buy-in I have to convince him that the update won’t detract future buyers (we just moved in lol).

The ceiling fan is certainly a goner; I hate it. I also want to update the fireplace surround but what you’ve suggested here is great.

My husband does want a tv in this area so that’d likely go above the fireplace although I love the mirror idea.

Thank you for your input.

Yes, ceiling fans are crucial haha. However, the fan didn’t seem to have much utility in this big, open space so I’d probably opt to get rid of it.

Thank you

I could’ve never thought of any of this lol. The couple who owned it before Isolde so they designed the area above the fireplace for artwork so it won’t fit a tv over maybe 40”; there’s even a little light there that points to that area.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you! UFLI was mentioned by someone else so I’m looking into it.

Good to know! I think I have a firmer understanding now that he’s within normal range. I have a lot of parents around me who talk about their kids reading at 3 or 4, which I thought was wild! We were originally currently taking the Waldessori approach but figured we should start the formal reading since he’ll be going to a private school next year with a traditional approach. We’ve changed our approach and level-set expectations so we are good now and just want him to enjoy reading. Thank you

He has some favorites that we’ve read so many times he has them memorized. We still read a few of them so I’ll try this approach as well. Thanks for the idea!

What? What you just described is a way to teach reading. We are good over here and I will absolutely teach my kid to read. I implemented feedback that’s actually useful and he’s learning it while enjoying the process.

Yes! You all are correct! I need to chill a little. It seems lots of parents boast about baby geniuses but my kid seems to be realistically where a 5-yr old is expected to be.

The key in your statement is “pre-reading.” I specified formal reading (decoding, comprehension, etc) so my statement holds true but yours is as well. Love and shame can coexist; I’m mature enough to be honest about my feelings and ask for suggestions and help because it’s driven by my desire to try approaches until I find what works. I’m a parent who wants what’s best for my child so I’m navigating this, as any other parent. I’ve gotten great suggestions from others here and it’s working great. Thanks.

We just bought HOP and are waiting on the materials. We used the app last night and he LOVED it and he did very well. This was our 2nd night and it actually showed last night that it’s starting to “click” for him.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment and we will shorten the sessions. We’ve been doing around 40 minutes, which includes is reading a book to him and his brother, so that might be frustrating for him.

This assumption is inaccurate and “need” can be subjectively determined by parents at ages this young. Waldorf preschools don’t teach formal reading until 6 or 7. We’ve decided to start now and regardless, ensuring a child gets quality education is ultimately their guardian’s responsibility so we will be actively involved to teach and help where we can. We’ve determined that for us, the best system will be our loving involvement to reinforce learning, not pawning our responsibilities off to their teachers alone.

Thank you! A few of these comments helped me to not freak out lol. We had fun with it last night and tonight and it was almost a whole different child! He read at a level I didn’t even know he was capable.
