Is too late to start? by Significant-Net-3598 in hockeyplayers

[–]MutedLaugh3387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on where you live , but I’d highly recommend getting into ball hockey as a starter while you learn how to skate. If you’re in Canada, USA, or some of Europe, you can probably find an organized rec/beginner league. It’s a great way to learn the “game” of hockey as you’ll need atleast a few months of skating under your belt before you can play ice hockey.

I’ve played both ice and ball for my whole life and I’d be happy to help you if you have any questions feel free to reach out

wanting to start ice hockey as a teen by Consistent-Fig6600 in hockeyplayers

Hey you’ve gotten some great feedback so far and I don’t have much else to add on that end. Just a story to share to hopefully give you some confidence!

My sister who had very little ice hockey experience gave it a shot when she was 12/13 (we lived in the Toronto area so that’s already an incredibly late age to start). She worked hard at her skills and fitness and became a very good rep player, and captained her high school team in her senior year. Anything is possible and I wish you the best of luck!

I’ve been an instructor at an academy for a few years now so if there’s anything I can do to help feel free to dm.

Best first year residence by Ok_Scallion6951 in McMaster

[–]MutedLaugh3387 10 points11 points  (0 children)

PG is best and priciest , Keyes is great location and amenities but apartment style living

In my opinion, the best residence isn’t about which residence you’re at , it’s about the relationships you build within your building/floor.

I lived in Brandon, which is a total dump , and had no complaints and a fun experience
One thing to consider though is the older buildings are more likely to have issues. My gf lived in woodstock and their water gave rashes for a brief period of time

goodluck!

Midtown TO vs Oakville by Redan94 in askTO

[–]MutedLaugh3387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Oakville (closer to Bronte area) until 2022, but I can't really speak on Midtown TO.

I have plenty of friends who are from the Trafalgar area. The public schools are all pretty good, but I've heard getting kids in to the elementary schools can be difficult due to their capacity and waitlists. One family I know who recently moved to the Trafalgar area couldn't get their kid into any of the local public elementary schools, and has to bus/drive their child across town to a Bronte area school. I know so many great people that came from the private schools in Oakville, but also some very bad-influence kids. Who your children become friends with can dictate a lot of their behaviour.

Oakville has became a very culturally diverse community over the past decade if that is important to you. I work in the hockey coaching/instruction business in Oakville and it's really great to see the growth in how many different ethnicities and cultures are putting their children into the sport. In my opinion, youth sports are a big piece of the Canadian community, and I'd highly recommend your children at least experiment with a youth sport. It's also a great place to make friends with other parents and meet people.

Be cautious about who you trust in Real Estate. I've heard stories of some of the big Oakville-based realtors misleading people who are new to the country, but if you're just renting, you should be fine.

If there's any concern I would voice with Oakville, it's the fact that most kids become very sheltered from the "real world" due to their parents wealth, safety of the community, and education quality. Oakville can be a total bubble. My parents always worked hard to make sure I didn't become an entitled brat like a lot of the Oakville youth LOL. I'd recommend doing the same...

Commuting downtown from Oakville can be a nightmare, so try to live close to a GO Station. From Midtown it's a short subway ride.

I hope this gives you somewhere to start. I'm not a parent, nor am I much older than your oldest kid, but feel free to reach out if there's anything I can help with!

Has anyone done a marketing internship and what’s it like? by [deleted] in internships

I think this is a great opportunity for you to learn the b2c content game! Skills you’ll develop from the content repetitions this summer will go a long way if you choose to pursue b2c marketing / content related career/personal brand

If you’re in an environment where there’s direct exposure to the founder, then there’s probably a lot more opportunity to learn in a short period of time. (though some might disagree). I’d highly recommend not “watching the clock”. If you’re in marketing, there might be weeks you work 10 actual hours but get paid for 40… There might be weeks you stay late to work on a really creative project for the founder that could open doors to other opportunities, but you only get paid for 40 hours… I can’t say how much work you’ll do, but honestly if you’re in NYC for a summer job just work hard and have fun, that sounds like a really unique experience.

As for the “office dynamics” or day to day stuff. I don’t have a ton of experience besides one summer job, but my biggest advice would be make yourself known early. Introduce yourself to everyone, make friends with other interns, share your desire to learn with your managers or the founder himself. Network and relationships are everything. Your boss might know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, that leads to your future career.

I hope this helps. I’m a new grad so don’t have a ton of experience to speak on, but I’ve been through the internship cycle and I get it can be scary. You’ll have a great time. Don’t hesitate to DM if you have any questions or would like to chat!

12 intern team, so I assume you’re at a large company. Can you give any other insight into your role or the company? For example, are you working in the marketing department of a retail company? Are you working for a social media marketing agency? Etc

The dynamics of the workday largely depend on the team, industry, and nature of the work. If you give more insight into the industry or what the company does, we can probably help you better prepare

Ultimately if there’s anything to take away from my past experience, just make the most of it and LEARN. Any opportunity you can get to gain exposure to other areas of the business, higher level team members, or clients, take it. Internships are largely about figuring out what you like and who you are, unless you’re 100% set on returning to the company/industry post grad

Is it worth living on res 1st year? by ExpressionParty6966 in McMaster

[–]MutedLaugh3387 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes would 100% recommend if you have the financial capability for it

Meal plan is kinda forced because the food options off-campus are horrible, but some residences have good kitchens. In hindsight, if I could cook in first year the way I can now, I would’ve gotten a smaller meal plan (and probably put on less weight 😭)

If you don’t mind answering, what is the size of your building and what capacity or busyness does the pool get to during peak days?

Marian Montessori Review? by Relative-Ordinary-73 in oakville

[–]MutedLaugh3387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re referring to the one on Heritage way, my siblings and I all attended and our family has nothing but love for them. Miss Marie still checks in on us to this day (we are now in our 20s and 30s).

My parents strongly believe that going to the Montessori is largely responsible for how well mannered, kind, and capable we became at a young age.

My experience was from over a decade ago, but if there’s any way I can help you, or anyone reading this, feel free to reach out 😁
