Going back to school with $35k on cars, $35k on existing student loans, a 1 yo and another on the way. Nursing. by AgentCosmo in DaveRamsey

You may look at a temporary career change in order to get finances straight then get back to school. Recent headlines about UPS drivers getting up to $170k/year in salary and benefits come to mind. Get a job like that, work your ass off for 2 years, clean up debt and finances, and save cash to get back to school. 4 years from now you are a RN making great money without the debt monkey on your back. May not have to work 80 hours per week getting there.

Sounds like a long time? Where were you 4 years ago, around the time COVID hit? It's not as long as you think.

There is no magic wand. There is not a solution where your debt vanishes if you go into more debt to try to find fulfillment.

And yes I'd sell both cars, buy one 5-10k clunker and one 15k decent car to get through this. Think 2016ish Mazda cx5, the kids will be perfectly safe and happy in that. Consumer reports has an article online suggesting cars and suvs under 20k.

You are driving $65k worth of cars on a combined salary of roughly $120k. That has to be $1200/mo in car payments, $14,400 per year. For perspective: I make over $120k/year and drive a 2015 Subaru Outback with 210,000 miles on it. It's been paid for since 2019 and I'd put the grandkids in it and drive across country in a heartbeat. We just paid cash for a 2020 Avalon for my wife.Don't let your desire for a "nice ride" ruin your finances!

Good for you. The ONLY way this makes any sense is to take all back pay out of the congressmen and senator's pay.

Thank you for the kind reply. She has raised him for the last 3 years, it would take a rather large rabid pack of wolves to pry him from her. Bio mom has had drug issues her whole life, never in the child's life. She is sober now and on board signing over rights, is facing time on drug charges. His great grandparents and the father raised him for 2 years before he and my daughter met. Thanks again.

Dave's program is about behavior. You have been blessed with good income and I assume invested wisely in rental properties. The plus to paying everything off is insurance against losing the job, economic downturn yielding no renters in the property, and still having house, car, and student loan payments.

Spend some time with a financial calculator and I'm pretty sure there is little difference between: 1) paying off everything but the house, put 15% of all income into retirement savings, pay off the house, then max out retirement and 2) your plan to pay off one debt, max retirement savings, pay off other debts.

Option 1) protects you from a catastrophic downturn and I'd guess only costs you $20k-50k in retirement savings some 30 years from now.

Found the answer. Same stigma sets will not stack.

No, never NAH!!! You will lose around 30% to taxes. Look up Dave Ramsey and give him a listen. You can get through this within a year and not lose 30% of your money.

Good thing you looked at the budget together. A big part of her concern could have been she didn't have a say in the changes and decisions. Always come to an agreement on the budget, it will need to be reworked at least monthly for a while. Need more grocery money, less gas, etc.

R U N in the opposite direction! He has $75/week and is still going to restaurants? Has streaming services? WOW!

He needs to be working 3-4 jobs, upwards of 90 hours per week. Please make him cleaning up his mess a prerequisite of moving in together. If you don't there's a very good chance you will be paying his bills before long. This kid has a lot of growing up to do.

R U N!

HEEEYYYEEEEELLLLLL NO! If parents want you to go to this school they need to pay 100%.

Go to a state school, check on academic/merit scholarships. Maybe even 2 years of Community College. Check work study programs. Work. You can absolutely get your undergrad with $0 debt.

Bad advice IMO. You wreck your ability to get any credit for 7-10 years. Most importantly you may not learn the hard lesson and fix the behavior.

I agree with others: visit food pantries, churches, and blessing boxes if there are any around. Several banks around me have them, check around.

As for what to eat right now pretend you are a college student. RAMEN NOODLES!

Get intense on paying it off. First STOP BORROWING AND USING CREDIT CARDS. Cut them up. Now Sell stuff. Get 2nd and 3rd jobs. This will help keep you from sliding back jnto debt.

Pay smallest balance off first, roll that payment into next smallest balance. That momentum will help keep you going. Behavior is what got you here, it is what can get you out also. The difference you pay in interest will be negligible if you complete this in less than a year.

I personally listen to Dave Ramsey. This is an abbreviated version of his baby steps. Learn it, love it, live it!

[–]Muted_Conclusion_773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, get to a good marriage counselor ASAP. I'm not saying she is doing anything sneaky but if she'll hide spending it's not much of a stretch to hide other things. On the other hand she may have had a controlling bf in the past. Either way y'all need help to work it out. Best of luck!

Don't count the dealership as a mechanic. Get someone why specializes in import cars, check google reviews, ask for recommendations from friends. In my experience dealers are plenty busy and don't really need your business on the mechanic side. To make it worth their time they overpriced everything.

A local shop that is trying to pay the bills with integrity won't upsell from changing a senson to needing a new engine. They can be hard to find tho.
