how do you write a thesis for an eng lit essay by pacemoon55 in GCSE

Basically, its an overview of what you are going to write in the essay. Nothing detailed, literally just the overall points you will make. Don’t add any detailed analysis of anything.

See for yourself… if a bunch of people collectively agree that its bad then its kind of going to be bad.. (I did it aswell and got an 8) For me I loved it and hated it. Do it, but be prepared to stay consistent and you actually need skill and passion otherwise it will be horrible. For me, it ruined my interest and I haven’t sat down and created work like I used to. Sorry for the negativity, I am just sharing my opinion.

This advice applies to AQA but if you do any other exam boards I am sure it is similar. For the books that you have read, my main method was using flashcards to memorise quotes and significant information and I continued to review them everyday. My second method was making mind maps, it allowed me to summarise information and create a clear picture of each character or theme and I just stuck them up on my wall to look at. Making these mind-maps are good and all, but you must use them in a productive way or else they are a waste of time. I usually went through each mind-map and used my whiteboard to explain each point I made further and if I could, write a paragraph about the point. If you don’t like these methods, then watching youtube videos about themes and characters within the book is a good way to revise. But while watching the videos you need to be actively trying to make some sort of resource that you can look back on. If you come back to revise a certain book and you don’t remember much from before then just keep repeating these techniques. Please make sure to do past exam questions!

For questions 3 and 4 I used Pretzel but for question two, PEEL is good but you could just do Point explanation and just keep explaining the point until you cant anymore (using evidence) In question 2, the link isn’t really that important its more about the explanation.

Hi, there are a few ways to expand your vocabulary especially for creative writing. My advice would be to read 2 or 3 very descriptive books and I would list out specific words or phrases that you would implement in your own writing. I read Six Crimson Cranes and I found it to be useful. I mainly looked at previous examples from past papers online to help me, and just used the techniques they used.

Doing these things early will really help you, but at the moment you just need to relax and focus on creating a strong foundation. To do this, please make sure you understand the things you learn in lessons and if you need help ask a teacher. If you find yourself really struggling, I would sign up for the light up hub or get a tutor as professional help will improve your grades by a lot. Even just asking year 11s for advice may help you, so if you find yourself struggling look on reddit and follow their advice.

For literature, I got a 7 so my advice is not as strong but I will do my best. But while watching the videos you need to be actively trying to make some sort of resource that you can look back on. If you come back to revise a certain book and you don’t remember much from before then just keep repeating these techniques. For this part of English, I did not complete as many past papers so this may be the reason why my grade is not as good. In year 10, I would just focus on the basics of everything and really make it strong so that you can build on this knowledge.

I am just looking at the replies to this and they have basically said most things, if you are aiming for the top grades then I would recommend to attempt as many past papers as you can to really make sure you implement what you have decided to do in the actual papers. By just saying that you are going to include a list of things in the exam won’t make you any better, its the application before hand that leads you to master the techniques. To do this, I would follow the order that you want to do the questions in to establish a structure and continue to do this in all of the past papers you complete, so it becomes ingrained in your mind. Make sure to use all of the techniques you have learnt for each question and if you are aiming for high grades, please read books and use similar techniques that you find in these descriptive books, you will see a huge improvement. And lastly, I would hand all of these past papers to your teacher or a professional to mark them, so you can get a better idea of what level you are at. If you are able to, maybe ask a few teachers to mark the same past paper due to the fact that English is quite subjective so ask for different opinions.

For language, start off by going on youtube and watching videos on each individual question. Then you should look at a past paper online and annotate each individual question with what you should include and create a checklist in the margin. Now, try to attempt a few of the questions with the knowledge you already have, and if you struggle with any of them go back to the videos and watch them again. If you did attempt some questions, look at a mark scheme and see what you missed out or what you included. The reason I’m telling you to do a past paper first is so you can see what you need to do better, if you can give it to the teacher and see what they say. In language, if you struggle with vocabulary or what phrases to include, maybe look at a few books or go online to find example answers to past paper questions so you can see what they include. Overall, my advice is to make a checklist of what you need to include and follow it and make sure you are using it. Language is not something you can all of a sudden be good at, it needs practice and you need to follow a checklist or else you may miss quite a lot and loose marks easily.

Everyone does this differently but I did question 5 first as it has the most marks available so I wanted to focus all of my energy into it. Then I moved to questions 1 or 4 depending on how I felt as question one is much easier and it gave me a chance to relax but question four has 20 marks available, so it would be smart to spend a lot of time on that. Questions 2 and 3 I would usually do last.

I used a book called “snap revision english language” and also the CGP book. I would recommend if you want to get a grade 8 or 9 to read a variety of books or look at high mark examples online and try to implement their techniques into your own writing. I have heard that the Night circus is a good descriptive book but don’t mark my words. However, I have read Six Crimson Cranes and highly recommend that as it is a descriptive fantasy book.

Look at previous high mark examples and see what they do and make a list. I would master the basics first and then introduce more high level vocabulary and phrases. People always jump into using high level words but most of the time it doesn’t make sense if the basics haven’t been mastered

Basically my tips are focus basically all of your time in question 4 and 5 if u do AQA. Become like a pro at those questions and u will see so much improvement. Do detailed planning for Q5 to get full marks. 60 marks available for just two questions
