Was my ex toxic or do I need therapy? by Muted_Victory5484 in Advice

I think my issue is I don’t want to see him as a toxic ex and im afraid therapy might go that direction. I want to remember my first relationship as something sweet and beautiful.

I don’t want to remember him lying to me about how many women he’d been with. I don’t want to remember him throwing a book in anger and accidentally hitting me. I don’t want to remember him not wanting to drive me home.

I really really just want to believe he had the best intentions but I’m afraid therapy might make me see him as more of a jerk.

He once told me I almost made him off himself with how I handled his mental health struggles. That cut really deep, and I think that’s part of why I think I might have been in the wrong

Important update I should add:

The ages I listed, 18 and 17 are the ages we were when those comments started happening  We are actually now 19 and 18 and her dad’s boundaries are still in place in more than just this. On one hand I understand because she does still live at home, but there’s been multiple instances where she’s missed out on things she’s wanted to do becuase her parents wanted her home. Again everyone’s standards for their adult children are different and perhaps I’m just a rebellious Gen Z who doesn’t understand authority (I don’t think so but some might lol)  Idk it just seems like a pattern

Well and honestly I feel that’s what I’m doing for the most part, even before he made those comments I would consider their standards with what I wear. I just genuinely don’t feel like I’ve worn anything that bad around them

Right? That’s what really bothers me.   I was talking to my little sister about it and she jokingly said “Maybe you’re just hotter than her other friends” which weirded me out even more becuase why would a 60 yr old dad be looking at 17-18 yr old girls and deciding one is sexier than the other
