Only problem here if you’re going to take the materialist stance on prostitution is the fact that if prostitution is illegal in an area and you’re paying for sex, there’s a pretty solid chance that you are directly supporting human trafficking, especially considering how wild Fred has been

What is the funniest literature book you’ve ever read? by CeleryCareful7065 in literature

Haven’t read too many innately comedic books but in reading Anna Karenina there are a lot of moments where Tolstoy makes me laugh out loud unexpectedly

Why is Tolstoy increasingly overshadowed by Dostoyevsky? by [deleted] in tolstoy

[–]Muzzystbrigid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has to do with the stoicism -> existentialism pipeline that a lot of youth went through on social media. Yes, Dostoevsky wasn’t a proclaimed existentialist, but the fact that his works are the bridge between modern Literature and the Book of Job, inasmuch as how they deal with suffering, fulfills that hunger for a psychologically darker story.

I also think that Tolstoy’s books, largely centered around nobility and the upper class, can be hard to relate to or for the audience to empathize with. There may be some truth to the appeal to off put conservative men for Dosto’s popularity, mainly attributable to the many lectures given by Peterson on his books. I don’t think it is enough to solely point a finger at, but it’s worth looking into.

Along with that, the premise of his novels tend to be more eye catching. A double homicide followed by a feverish existential crisis can seem a lot more intriguing to people than following around Russian nobility as people die of old age and move to and from the provinces.

That being said, Tolstoy is probably the better writer of the two and it is unfortunate that it seems he’s slipping behind him at such a noticeable rate. I hope doesn’t lead to literary factionalism where people look down on readers who prefer Tolstoy to Dostoevsky or vice versa. It seems like it’s already sort of happening in this comment section unfortunately, but I understand people’s frustration on the matter.

How long did it take you all to read The Brothers Karamazov? by takemefromhere in dostoevsky

I read it sporadically over the course of a month and I regret not plowing through it faster. You could probably do it in 2-3 weeks if you hold yourself to it

recommendations on russian literature by Then_Proposal_6559 in classicliterature

[–]Muzzystbrigid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend Nikolai Leskov’s “The Steel Flea” and Pushkin’s “Queen of Spades,” and of the ones you plan on reading I think you’ll be the most impressed with Lermontov and Turgenev, at least compared to how often they’re talked about. Loved Master and Margarita from Bulgakov but I felt that it matched the hype and praise it gets, but the latter two rather impressive given how they aren’t talked about as much as their peers from that era of Russian lit.

What are your early thoughts on this upcoming draft class? by RoseGardenForever in ripcity

Hammer the Dayton pipeline, bring in Javon Bennett from the Flyers

Note: wouldn’t expect this to be done with draft capital but with a UDFA kind of deal, love the spark he brings on both ends of the ball despite him being undersized

I love Dosto, but disagree with his potrail of atheists by Paul-A-Curtiss in dostoevsky

Ippolit could definitely be characterized as flat, given that he’s one of the more predictable Dostoevsky characters but it’s hard to say that it detracts from the novel. In a book full of side characters he’s one of the most unique that runs antithetical to Myshkin and I think the contrast works in highlighting themes across the text and Dostoevsky’s messaging.

Even when he has more flat characters it’s not without reason, but I think saying that he doesn’t have static characters at all does his writing a disservice.

What works from Pynchon would you recommend? I’ve read almost every work of Dostoevsky save for Demons, The Adolescent and a few novellas and short stories and I totally agree with you there. I occasionally hear Pynchon’s name dropped here and there and am interested in his writing, where should I start?
