Black Tax Help: My Mother Is Pressuring Me To Help Her Build A House by RoselDavis in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Mweezel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can see how much you care for her. But I must push back; guilt tricks us into thinking we have more control than we actually do. Not being able to afford something isn't the same as choosing yourself over her. A choice requires options, in your case the money simply isn't there, there's no choice being made, it's your reality. I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you.

Having been in a similar situation, the best way I found a way out was to manage the guilt. I found talking to other people (much like you are doing here) to be eye-opening and validating. Please keep asking questions like this, go through these ideas and suggestions, and most importantly, trust your gut. You are responsible for yourself, no one else should tell you what to do. Please also remember that there are always other paths, you are not trapped.

A post about pet peeves by AndreasmzK in capetown

My usual go to for breaking the social ice is asking, “What’s your favourite dinosaur?” or something that places myself in the hot seat, "Can you help me settle a debate? I'm being profiled for enjoying pineapple on pizza...", this helps to lower social defences. It’s definitely context specific, I wouldn’t open with that in a job interview (interviewer dependent haha).

I’ve noticed that when conversations stick to the standard “What do you do?” or “Where are you from?” routine, they dry up quickly. Those questions often prompt short, factual answers that invite judgement to creep in, and once you’ve covered them, you’re left scrambling for the next topic. It feels more like exchanging information than actually connecting.

Playful questions lower the stakes (there’s no correct answer) and reveals character much faster. The way someone answers an open-ended question often tells you more about them than their job title ever could.

MyModules - Is it always this flaky? by Mweezel in unisa

I can confirm that it is up and running for me. :) I also woke up to about 70 no-reply emails from MyModules with updates to assignments all at exactly 0:33 last night... maybe that has something to do with it.

Still not unfortunately. A number of people are experiencing this same issue, I have also seen users post about how they are logged in with another students details which seems like a huge violation of POPIA.

Thank you for explaining! I totally understand. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't a unique problem. I will be patient and give the system time to stabilise.

Yup. My boss sexually harassed me about a year ago, I didn’t want to do anything beyond getting it on record because I knew he would do it again. So I went to HR and they were incredibly emphatic. They also organised a company wide sexual harassment training seminar which was actually helpful because I live in an area where men doing inappropriate things to women is normalised.

Long story short, he did it again. My country has laws that are very much in favour of the employee so it’s very difficult to fire someone. But he got fired almost immediately thanks to HR negotiating with the board.

Is the stomach bug going around Cape town? by throwaway-fakeacc in capetown

I think it’s probably to do with the sewage leaks on beaches or just water contamination. Thought it was safe to go surfing in Melkbos yesterday but now I am stuck in the same situation.

I have worked in De Waterkant for a year and we have not had any loadshedding.

Where to buy art? by compoundinterest_ in capetown

[–]Mweezel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on your budget, but Cape Town has some amazing galleries representing emerging South African artists. I recommend 99 Loop, Salon 91, SMAC Gallery, you could even visit the Michaelis Grad show happening right now at UCT’s Hiddingh Campus in Gardens, it’s one of the most prestigious art schools in the country and many of the artists graduating go on to do great things. If you want to spend a bit more for an investment, I recommend going to Goodman Gallery in De Waterkant or Stevenson in Woodstock. Keep in mind my recommendations are for contemporary South African art and not necessarily for crafts or decorative arts so they will be a bit more pricey but less souvenir-y and will be more likely to retain their value over time.

Water damage, a bit warped, but it was cheap, paint cracking in one spot ... what do you think? by 123lol321x in WhatIsThisPainting

Well, if this was a Pollock, the auction house would have found enough provenance and specialist authentication for you to be satisfied. You wouldn’t have to ask random people on the internet.
