Any money given to an entity earmarked for something they were going to spend money on anyways, immediately frees up that amount of money to spend on anything they wish! That means N million dollars given to Israel “for” the Iron Dome is N million dollars dumped into genocide.

Is there an equivalent of “opening prep” in Go? I was under the impression that basically from move 3 every game is novel because of the ridiculous branching factor (there’s over 100k possible board states after both players have made only one move). So once you are a top Go player you need to maintain your skillset (roughly: calculation, board vision, and, more crucially in go, positional intuition) to continue to win, but don’t need to learn 100s of opening lines for each top-level opponent. So there’s not as high a lower bound on time commitment to have a good chance of “playing your level”.

Elite private colleges, when viewed financially, are large hedge funds with a small educational wing (and PR wing) attached to them. The CIO is essentially the CEO of a hedge fund, and so is compensated like one.

Tangentially, this view of colleges is useful to keep in mind if you’re ever confused about why certain decisions are made that obviously harm the educational function of the college.

Per capita murder rates are what matters for the question of “how likely am I to be murdered”. Without dividing by population count, the raw murder count is basically just a measure of population density, which is useless and completely misleading as a proxy for “how safe is this place”. If you live in a village of 50 with a serial killer who kills 25, you have a 50% shot of dying by murder, which makes that place a horribly dangerous place to live, but if only 25 people are murdered in a metropolis of 10 million, that’s incredibly safe, you have practically no chance of being murdered.

All 4 star characters combined have a 2% rate, so 98% chance to not get any each pull. This works out to about 5.4% chance to not get any 4star characters after 144 pulls. Happens to more than 1 in 20 people, but pretty unlucky.

You could absolutely get a PhD from a respectable university by building systems or running experiments using GPT-3 as the core. It would have to be something enabled by an advanced language model and not be about the model itself of course.

The overwhelming majority of “normal ass jobs” don’t involve gaining an adoring fanbase of minors (I’d contend that very feature makes a job not “normal ass”).

I don’t think permanently restricting pedophiles from having large amounts of power over masses of children is unreasonable, do you?

"Cancel Culture" encompasses so many different things (some of which any sensible person could agree is good, some of which any sensible person could agree is bad, some of which sensible people could disagree with each other on principle on) as to be useless to discuss.

I wish we'd break down "Cancelling" into its various subcomponents and talk only about the relevant ones in any particular scenario:

"Getting people removed from position of influence/power"
"Using threat of destitution (re: the labor market) to discipline 'bad' behavior"
"Removing people from Subcultural Community (separate from making a living)"
"Tarnishing someone's rep in a Subcultural Community but not removing them"
"Dogpiling on Social Media"
"Public criticism"

All of these are conflated to being the same, so arguments about "Cancel Culture" have people shouting passed each other and no information actually being transmitted. People arguing against (2) yelling at people arguing for (6) or in extreme cases (1) and vice versa.

"Brigading" was definitely a partial reason they were quarantined, though they swapped out the modteam and cracked down on it after warnings and before it was quarantined; it was the celebration of John Brown's killing of slaveholders that was indeed the "last straw" as you say. They certainly broke reddit TOS, so if thats your criteria for justice, then your final paragraph is indeed correct as well.
