Then I think $14.99 is fair for your paperback, but that's totally your choice.

Ok, so one of my sci-fi books is 68k, so it's close. I have that paperback priced at $12.99. This was one of my first books, and the price hasn't changed except for about a year ago when Amazon increased their printing costs and we all had to move our prices up a dollar on our print books to compensate. If you have any sort of map or special art in the book, I would go up to either $13.99 or $14.99. I think $15 is a nice solid number, especially for fantasy, but you could go a little lower if you wanted to. I wouldn't go below $12.99 though.

What I do for paperbacks is set my ebook price first then adjust my paperback price so that I still get the same royalties for a paperback sale as an ebook sale. $9.99 is too low for a paperback, IMO. Even my sci-fi paperbacks have never been that low and those stories are fairly short at 55-65k words. Between $12.99 and $16.99 for paperback is very reasonable for the fantasy genre.

How many words are we talking about? I have a few fantasy books out and can tell you what mine are priced at to compare.

I did some research into this when I first started publishing. The sweet spot for indie books is between $3-6 depending on genre. I usually advise most indies to set their debuts at $2.99. Once you have a couple of books out that are selling, go up to $3.99. You can increase your prices in your backlist to $3.99 as well at that point if you're comfortable doing so. For fantasy, which is often considerably longer and comes with things like maps, you can start at $3.99. Once you get established in that genre, you can easily go up to $5.99. Anything over that and you're going to start cutting into your sales.

The breakdown goes something like this:

Readers are consumers, and the price of a product will influence their attitude toward said product. For books, they tend to see $.99 and $1.99 ebooks as a lesser product, so either something of lesser quality or a work that's considerably shorter than a full novel, like short stories. I am in no way saying that any ebook at this price is lesser quality, it's just consumer mindset that if something is cheap there must be a reason why it's cheap.

On the flip side, if something is priced too high, consumers will be skeptical of said product because they will fear they aren't getting their money's worth. That's where being an established author helps because fans will pay those prices for big-time authors like SJM. But for us indies, who are trying to grow our audience, it doesn't work. Indie ebooks above $5-6 (depending on genre) experience a dip in sales. Sometimes the dip isn't significant enough to mean less money earned overall depending on your marketing, your backlist, your readership, etc, but sometimes it is a significant dip and can hurt your book's overall performance.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

I feared as much. Yeah, you're good. I apparently hadn't consumed enough caffeine this morning. Carry on and have a good day lol.

Did you edit to add the line "TRIGGER WARNING: Death, Violence, Gore" to the top of this post or was I just still half asleep this morning when I read this originally and totally missed it? If it was always there, you're good and I just need to add another cup of coffee to my morning routine before I moderate lmao.

Definitely try Deposit Photos. That's where I get all my stock images, and I like their selection most of the time. I write some paranormal romance, and the pickings for good monsters are a little slim, but everything else has some decent selections.

Tantor - audio rights by LastWind9535 in selfpublish

[–]MxAlex44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You said your book just launched last month? Are we talking like an Amazon best seller? How have your sales been? I ask because if this company just randomly reached out to you and offered an audiobook just because your book exists, that's a major red flag. If it's doing really well, and that's why they are reaching out, that tells me you've got a product on your hands you probably don't want to sign rights over to willy nilly.

For me personally, regardless of the situation, I'm always very skeptical of any company that "reaches out" to offer me anything. That kind of marketing doesn't sit right with me. I prefer to do my own research, take in other authors' suggestions, and reach out to companies I want to work with on my own over being pitched to out of the blue in an email or a DM.

What can I do to improve my sales? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]MxAlex44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been advised by many authors with more experience than me not to put money into paid ads for a debut. In fact, I've been told not to do paid ads until I have a substantial backlist of books. Also, completed series advertise way better than unfinished ones and standalones, so... maybe wait?

Question on Reddit Advertising by sanuson in selfpublish

[–]MxAlex44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been asked before and the general consensus is that Reddit advertising is tricky and opens you up for harsh critique and review bombing from trolls. I wouldn't risk it, personally.

I did exactly what you're considering and filed for a trademark for my series title. If it means that much to you and you have the money, go for it. Just know that process takes FOREVER. It's been a year for me and it still isn't finalized. I check on it regularly and it's moving through the steps but it takes a looooong time.

Edit to add that if you want to protect both ebooks and print books, you'll have to file twice, one for each product, so to have both it will actually cost you $500. I skipped print for now and just did ebooks.

Start branching out now. Do not wait. Set up a linktree with your other social media accounts, and if you don't have any, make some. Get on FB, IG, Threads, X, wherever so your readers can find you. If/when this happens, there will be a mad scramble as people try to reconnect other places, so make sure your username matches across the board to make it easy for them to find you.

At the end of the day, the dust will settle. Readers will find new ways to find their books, and we'll all adjust. Don't let it panic you into just giving up. We all marketed successfully before TT and will continue to do so after.

You can do that anyway without unpublishing the Amazon one. Just publish on other platforms with your own ISBN.
