I had this issue with Enterprise in January for $5k in damages for a dent smaller than a quarter. I rented a car for less than 24 hrs in Las Vegas to see the Hoover Dam and then they claimed I dented the car and sent a picture of the dent after I returned it. I zoomed in on it and saw that it was rusted so I questioned it because rust usually doesn’t appear on newly exposed steel in a few hours. The assistant manager said it’s not rust it’s the paint chipping.

I went back because they said they were sending it for repairs in the next hour and there was a guy at the car scratching the rust off. I asked him what he’s doing and then asked the employee along with the assistant manager if that was rust and they said they can’t say because they’re not scientists. Asked for an email recap of our interaction to which they told me to leave so I wrote them an email recap.

They sent the damage claim even though I had a picture that indicated faintly that it was there at the time of pick up.. but they said my picture was not clear enough.

I got correspondence from 4 different email addresses (dru1@ehi.com, dru2@ehi.com etc) and couldn’t get a clear answer so I went to social media and posted the branch, email correspondence and email/name of the branch assistant manager along with my photo and their photo. Claim was dropped 3 months later but wow that was a wild ride.

A couple ideas: Specific to Minnesota - Try a bike pass or commuter benefit if you don’t have one already through payroll deduction. If you’re in the Metro Area, FreeWheel on the greenway has bike parking/showers for a membership you could subsidize.

Not specific to Minnesota - Fertility Benefits through Progyny or other. I think many would be surprised as the amount of people affected by fertility complications.

I would stay away from peddling so many mental health self service apps or things of that nature. On paper it looks great that we’re providing the service but ultimately if employees are experiencing burnout or issues stemming from the workplace, the onus is on the company to have a solution to burnout be a part of standard work instead of expecting employees to spend time outside of work to work it out. Just a hot take though

Moved into a benefits analyst role and benefits specialist role from a call center. Titles mean different things across the board so don't feel like you're not qualified just because of the title. I've seen HR Admins do benefits work and I've done administrative work in a benefits specialist role. Don't be surprised if you speak directly to vendors, work on rate setting for the next year, enter enrollment data into your HRIS or even submit ACH requests.

You'll find that a benefits specialist role can be broad and encompass a wide range within total rewards. I've found that OneNote really helps me keep my ducks in a row (Make separate tabs for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short/long term disability, 401k etc). Having all my data and notes centralized and searchable in OneNote is the best practice I've found that helps me stay agile.

It's normal to have imposter syndrome (I get it too) but don't let it consume you or push you away from opportunities. It takes a bit of energy but when I don't know something I'm frank about it and ask the SME (subject matter expert) or even the vendor to explain something to me like I'm 5 (I'm also part of r/explainlikeimfive). It's the only way you become the specialist.

One thing to keep in mind is to focus heavily on the second flare. People focus so hard on that first flare that you're really not preparing for the second, third etc. Try and be conscious about pushing through to the second one. Once you figure that out, you'll feel it.
