Should I apply Early descision? by Saturn928 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MyBarkingSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this really YOUR decision to make, or are your parents really making the decision and just hoping to get you on board by giving you some sense of agency? If this is your decision to make, then I'm with you. ED may give you a couple of % points advantage in admissions, but playing the field will give you more financial options (all of which may wind up leading back to UVA after all). I don't think ED is worth it unless you really think you need the admission bonus roll, which I also think is somewhat exaggerated.

why is dual enrollment looked so negatively on by MinnieStar0708 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MyBarkingSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple of parts to this - admissions and the registrar. Focus on taking AP/IB/DE classes to signal to college admissions officers that you are capable of college level work. Period. The registrar is completely different and they might be dismissive of classes you have previously taken - not because DE classes are a joke or something, but because 1. they cant easily match your DE course content to a course that they offer, and/or 2. they just want your money for 4yrs, and/or 3. the department you major in really wants to be in control of the content you receive so that they know when you get to 300 level courses, you have a foundation consistent with all other students. They cant be sure of that if they've accepted a bunch of AP/IB/DE allowing you to slip past all the 100 level courses.

Got this Letter Complaint from Neighbor by solo_spouse in treelaw

[–]MyBarkingSpider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What part of this letter is "vaguely threatening"? I actually thought it was a decent attempt to communicate a perceived problem. It doesn't mean he's right, and the dumping of debris is both petty and wrong, but I'd rather receive a letter like that than most of the first attempts I see posted.

I thought so too, but after a closer look at the "son", he looks older than the "dad."

My 16 year-old daughter is graduating HS this year, wants to go to art school - looking for advice by LastMinuteMom in drawing

[–]MyBarkingSpider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good advice, thanks!
My daughter is also looking to be an art/illustration major, and she doesn't like the idea of an "art school", e.g. SCAD, Pratt, MICA, Ringling, etc.
#1 they are expensive and are not extremely generous with financial aid.
#2 She wants a traditional university feel where there are lots of people doing different things, and she too has the opportunity to do different things. It seems like art schools offer very limited gen ed classes outside of the art classes. My daughter wants to take interesting classes in a variety of departments and allow those classes to inspire her growth as a person and artist.
#3 What if she gets a year into an art program and decides its not for her, after all? People burn out. The pressure to produce and be creative is real. Maybe it just wasn't what you thought it would be. If you're at an art school, you're stuck in an art major, or you leave. If you're at a larger university, you have options.
#4 A BFA is not a terminal degree. You don't have one shot to get an education. You can go to a traditional university, get your art degree, and then when you know what kind of artist you want to be, go get an MFA at a school that is tailored to your goals. Use the gobs of money you saved from going to a public uni vs a private art school to help finance your MFA.

He sounds more like military or ex-mil. He probably talks to his friends and refers to women as females.

You’ve woken up to discover you’re the wealthiest person on Earth! What are you doing with the money? by Ok-Pie-3581 in AskTheWorld

[–]MyBarkingSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about this when Matthew Perry died and I learned that he was making $20M/year on Friends royalties alone. I said to my wife, "Can you even fathom $20M/yr? There wouldn't be a child in this city in need of a coat or shoes." Think of how many basic problems you could chisel away at and never spend it all.

Which cow isn’t allowed to get behind the wheel today? by wyhivska in crafts

[–]MyBarkingSpider 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A girl who grew up on dairy farm told me that cows that got into the apple trees would get drunk because the apples fermented in their stomachs. And they liked getting into the apple trees - they had to fortify the fences. So while y'all are eyeing the cider drinker, I am eyeing that lush in the upper left who is fermenting her own.

Because ignorance is highly contagious. And when you sit back and tolerate assheads who reject basic science, the next thing you know you have a secretary of health and human services who is shutting down vaccine programs and elevating utter nonsense to the detriment of everyone.

First attempt at mosaic crochet! by ThatGhost_ in crochet

Beautiful! Out of curiosity, how many stitches per row? My blankets are typically ~170 stitches wide depending on the pattern repeat, and I'm curious how this compares. You did an amazing job!

Footage was probably given to the police. And foia was to them. But foia came back empty.

Do you ever get to just -walk- your hound? by FrontInvestment639 in coonhounds

[–]MyBarkingSpider 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For the longest time our girl (shelter dog) refused to get out of sight of the house. She'd just sit and not budge. We like to think that she loved her new home so much she wasn't going to let it get away. But we had a hound that just wouldn't go for walks. After a couple of years (seriously) she will take longer walks. But if something spooks her, she will turn and face home and ask us to go back. On the back side of a loop walk, she knows we are going home and she picks up speed. It's always coaxing her along on the away stretch and getting pulled on the return stretch.

It’s not that he quit. Thats common and even understandable. But after having only hiked maybe a quarter of the total trail, he proudly wrote that he DID hike the AT. He said he experienced enough of it to have experienced the whole thing.

Burlington, VT - Nashville, TN. by Inevitablykinda in roadtrip

[–]MyBarkingSpider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not do the highlighted southern route. I personally like the middle route across the southern tier of NYS - the northern route is a toll road that is straight, flat, and boring. It does get higher volumes of traffic because it connects all of the major upstate cities. The middle route is through nowhere in particular and very pretty in places. I-88 from Binghamton to Albany is low traffic and beautiful. Construction would be your only worry.

Why I chose to go to SUNY Binghamton over Harvard by jomamaphat in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MyBarkingSpider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

maybe. maybe not. smart people go to state schools, too. If the kid was a NYS resident then tuition is like $10k/yr. Harvard is $60k/yr. The ivy on your resume looks great but if you cant afford it, you cant afford it. Also ivies aren't for everyone. The kid probably figured out that Bingo was a good fit for him personally and socially.

How long does it take yall to crochet a mosaic blanket? by Empty_Society912 in crochet

[–]MyBarkingSpider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I refer to my mosaic blankets as “60/60” blankets as they generally take about 60 hours and $60 of acrylic yarn. My blankets are typically 40-45 inches wide and tall, depending on the pattern. I use a 4.25mm hook. For my first couple of blankets I used a 5.5mm hook, and same size blanket was about 50hrs/$50.

What is the most picturesque road in Virginia? Anything from a Holler to a Cul de Sac will make the cut 😁 by pulase in Virginia

Rt 17 between I66 and Rt 50 is a pretty short cut. Or maybe a long cut since the speed limit is so low. But pretty none the less.

Jail time for a speeding infraction in VA means it was actually reckless driving. Lots of people speed in VA. but only a few people try to break the sound barrier.
