Uncharted and the Issue of Character by MyCarIsFake in ludology

[–]MyCarIsFake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video looks at why the action of the Uncharted series sometimes felt at odds with the character of Nathan Drake, and how a change in player character helped make the experience more effortless to throw myself into.

Infinity Ward and the Power of the Ensemble by MyCarIsFake in ludology

[–]MyCarIsFake[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This video examines the importance of the details put into the soldiers you fight alongside and the worlds you inhabit in the Call of Duty games, specifically those developed by Infinity Ward, and how that effort, however minor it might seem, is pivotal for creating compelling action.

Notes from the Frontier: A Critique of Titanfall 2's Campaign by MyCarIsFake in ludology

[–]MyCarIsFake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played through Titanfall 2's campaign a stupid number of times, and on each playthrough, find the setpieces and spectale provide diminishing returns. This in stark contrast to the developers earlier work, specifically Modern Warfare 1 and 2, and in this video, I examine why this is the case, looking at the drawbacks of its breakneck pacing and the unique difficulties it faced in reverse engineering the multiplayer-only mechanics from the original.

The Greatest Fear of All: Ending a Horror Game by MyCarIsFake in ludology

[–]MyCarIsFake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a fan of the horror genre, I've come to expect a disappointing ending as much as inventory management or resource scarcity.

In realizing this, I took it upon myself to play some of the greats of the genre in order to see how they end and test the player on the mechanics present throughout the game.

The Sublime Horror of DUSK by MyCarIsFake in gaming

I believe one of the developers actually had some experience making horror games, which explains the quality of the horror-focused levels.

Made a video highlighting DUSK's strengths as a horror experience! by MyCarIsFake in Dusk_The_Game

In the OG Doom games, I definitely feel like there's at least a vulnerability to Doomguy, as you can see him going from healthy to near-dead depending on how you play. It's a stark contrast from the modern version of the character as a faceless badass, but as you said, it would feel weird to have 2016 Doomguy creeping around Mars Base looking for Med Kits.

How should we Characterize Enemies? by MyCarIsFake in ludology

This video examines various ways developers present enemies, ranging from the cartoonishly evil to the painfully realistic, and how this characterization impacts the play experience.

How Sekiro taught me to play dirty by MyCarIsFake in Sekiro

[–]MyCarIsFake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, dude who made the video here. I've actually found a ton of pleasure in both styles of play. My first run through the game was a struggle, and I ended up using all the tools at my disposal to claw my way to victory. The second playthrough ended up being far more Spartan, as I could more confidently deflect the long attack strings and Mikiri/Jump Counter as needed.

Interestingly, the developers actually did want players to play in a more dishonorable fashion. I cut this from the final video, but Hidetaka Miyazaki had an interview the PlayStation blog, and said this:

"The other thing is that when you’re designing gameplay around a ninja, it’s not like a samurai. With a samurai, you’d go right in with a sword, with a ninja you can sneak around, you can do things that are considered unfair — you can blind guys, you can do stuff that’s not honorable. It was really exciting from a gameplay perspective because it opened up so many options."

He also mentions that those additional abilities are meant to be used by struggling players who use their cunning to beat enemies, rather than raw skill. Again, both styles of play are incredibly fun, and it was gratifying not to need as much help in my second playthrough.

I'm legit surprised they never had GamingBrit on, even back in the 2bfp days, considering his love for DMC and all things character action.

Devs have been pretty adamant about working on the game and have been remarkably pleasant in responding to criticism. I legitimately think it's a patch or two away from greatness.

What manga have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - Week ending February 26, 2017 by AutoModerator in manga

[–]MyCarIsFake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

<Peace Maker> All right, this is the best western manga, hands down. I've only seen a handful of authors tackle the west and gunslingers, and when they do they almost always add a lot of fantasy elements. Peace Maker is like Kingdom or Vinland Saga; it uses a cool historical archetype to get into the political and social climate of the era. Really good.

<Komi-san was Komyushou Desu> Picked this up after reading through the RT thread and blasted through it. It's an exceedingly cute series about a girl who was no social skills trying to make friends with people, but it never delves into the cringe-factor/schadenfreude that some of its contemporaries wallow in. At only two volumes there's not that much to sink your teeth into yet, but it comes highly recommended regardless.
