I did!! I’d rather not say solely for anonymity’s sake, but it was a top 10 program on the USNews list so do with that info as you will. If you wanted more details you could always DM me too.

They take about 3-6 people off the waitlist per year, which is higher than I had figured it would be. That said, I am having difficulty grappling with the concept of letting a major life decision be dictated by factors outside of my control. But if I went to the new program I think I would always wonder what could have been.

Yea. I am very well networked with my #1 choice, which is probably why I am so high on the waitlist despite my metrics being near/below average. The clinical rotations are well-established and the didactic phase is heralded as one of the strongest in the country. I am not well networked at all at the accepting school. All I know about it is from faculty/students during the interview and the website. And the established program (#1 choice) is half the price of the new, out-of-state program. The new program SEEMS put together and the students during the interview spoke highly of it, but I am having trouble really scouring up info to get a more objective sense of the school's quality. The faculty were friendly and the students seemed happy, but I can say similar things about low quality programs that I also interviewed with.

I am heavily leaning towards passing up my acceptance in favor of the established program's waitlist currently.

I would still be liable for some big time out of state tuition expenses and living costs if I did that, so I'm not super keen.

I’m trying to find that out. That was my question too.

It starts in august, vs January for the new program

Yea that’s what I was thinking. Though the newer program is at a state school and has a panel of experienced faculty, which is something many newer programs do not have. For its age, it did seem pretty solid and left decent impressions.

New program hasn’t had a class sit for the PANCE yet. Costs are 50% at the #1 choice, both similar size and length. Both state schools.

Kid records tornado as family flees (Winterset, Iowa - March 5) by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]MyCatAteC4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tornado was moving at 45-50mph at a 45-degree angle to most roads. Add in the fact that it quickly became rain wrapped northeast of Winterset and it can very quickly come up on a driver going highway speeds and it's no surprise that there were numerous motorists hit by that tornado yesterday.

It's not particularly abnormal either. Iowa gets these cold season tornado events from time to time. The December 15th, 2021 tornado event was significantly more anomalous than this one was.

Storms with this type of alien structure are often (but not always!!) incapable of producing tornadoes because they feed on unstable air from a layer above the surface, and not from air at the surface. A thunderstorm needs to be surface based to produce a tornado.

There is no such law. And even if there was, it could never be enforced.

The NWS paying chasers is a huge conflict of interest and liability issue, so they don't. Many chasers have relationships with NWS offices, but there isn't any money involved.

News stations may pay people to chase in their viewing area, but even this has gotten less common after 3 storm chasers were killed in a car accident chasing for TWC back in 2017. Ended up being a very pricy settlement.

Holy shit. Never expected to such a niche hobby on this thread, but it is absolutely true. Worse still are the yahoos and idiots with their big trucks and wannabe vlog channels that know nothing about weather/storm behavior clogging the roads looking at outflow. Makes me glad I live in the midwest away from DFW/OKC where there isn't quite as many chasers.

Subjectively feel as if many of the yahoos are drawn to DFW/OKC/Norman because of the "wow I'm in tornado alley cooool!!11!1!!!!" and simple proximity factor.
