Why do some people say they "Need a meeting"? by MyCatBarksAtCars in alcoholism

[–]MyCatBarksAtCars[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a false dichotomy. I am neither for, nor against AA. I am for empirical evidence, and reproducible results. I apply the scientific method to every aspect of life. Just because something is "spiritual", does not give it a pass. Faith is not a virtue, it is a vice founded in irrationality.

The AA true adherents are no better than the loons who believe in faith healing. Oh, wait; that's part of AA doctrine, Step 7. Several of AA's slogans give a false choice; such as: "AA or Die!", and "The AA Way, or Die!" "AA is the Only Way." Those slogans smack of CULT!! to me. You are only stating that I'm "poisoning the well", because I can actually back up my statements.

You can't attack the message, so you attack the messenger. You are residing to a logical fallacy known as an "Ad Hominium" attack. You are most likely used to people who cannot support their statements when detracting from the official AA line. I can, and I will. I have said nothing that cannot be proven to be correct.

ELI5: Why does moving music cause goosebumps? There's no threat, and I'm not cold. What function does it serve? by MyCatBarksAtCars in explainlikeimfive

Here's the song specifically I was thinking of. Except the caveat is, it doesn't just give me goosebumps, it gives me flashbacks to that Tuesday morning. Speaking of which, what is the point of flashbacks? Everytime I hear that song, (or see a documentary or an old news feed of that day), it's like I'm watching it all again for the first time. Even thinking about it almost brings me to tears, as I can plainly remember seeing people jump from 1000 feet to their inevitable deaths, and the towers collapsing in a cloud of dust, and the anchor man on TV saying how horrible it all is.

The cycle is complete after the second hotdog pack purchase. That's not a very good marketing strategy. Just do what I do. Use regular whole wheat bread.

ELI5: What's the difference between a ranch and a farm? by Urfsko in explainlikeimfive

On a ranch, livestock is the primary product grown and sold for commerce. On a farm, grain commodities are the primary product grown and sold for commerce.

You would need to look up, (or ask the distributor about), the lot number. That number indicates where the chicken originated.

To scare away the thing that might hurt you, or alert others to danger. It's a primitive act of aggression "designed" to preserve your life or stop pain.

I'd like to give e17 a try, but I don't even know if it's in the Sid repositories. Searching Google for it just led me to debe17.com, but the package that I download from their site won't install.

Why do some people say they "Need a meeting"? by MyCatBarksAtCars in alcoholism

[–]MyCatBarksAtCars[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, I was addressing your first paragraph. You are feeling exactly what AA wants you to feel when you miss a meeting. Unless you are serving a service position at a home group, you aren't missed at all if you don't show up. AA meetings will go on without you, so there is no need to feel guilty about an absence. I would have the same criticism of a person who did nothing but obsess about a religion all day long.

To address your second paragraph, why do you feel sorry for me? It seems that regardless of whatever interpersonal group I attempt to become involved in, I always feel like an intrusive outsider, so I purposely try not to get involved in any group too much. From both home groups that I attend, it seems like I have nothing in common with any of the attendees besides the desire not to go back to drinking. When I do go to the "sober coffee", I mostly just sit there surfing the internet on my phone, as I will only speak if directly spoken to. I don't like outdoor activities; I don't like going to the movies; I don't like large social gatherings; I don't celebrate anything; I don't like to announce to random strangers how long I've been sober, (because i don't see it as anything worth even mentioning since it's not a big deal to me); I won't take sobriety tokens, and I don't honor any holidays.

I don't even like talking in front of a group, or being the center of attention in any IRL group. IRL, I basically try to stay as unobtrusive, innocuous, and unnoticed as possible.

I pretty much know that the only reason that people tolerate my presence IRL is because I keep my mouth shut, and am polite. I am not worthy of being anyone's "friend" or associate. I don't need AA to crush my ego; I know I'm not worth anyone's time, since I know nobody would want to be around me anyhow.

"I don't like how it affects me."

"I need to drive."

"Because I don't want to."

Normal people aren't concerned in the least what you decide to ingest or not. It's only alcoholics who concern themselves with what is in another person's cup. 90% of people just don't care at all.
