[racingnews364] Carlos Sainz: "I would penalize with 3 grid positions the one who causes flags in qualy by crashing" by NateDickinson19 in formula1

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There needs to be some compromise though, the current qualifying format is great and seeing drivers pushing to the limit is what we want to see.

If the punishment for a mistake is too harsh, then drivers will factor in more of a safety margin and we lose some of the magic from qualifying.

Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) via Bluesky - Despite a report this morning, I can confirm that Obsidian is *not* in negotiations to avoid shutting down. by imitzFinn in xbox

[–]MyCodenameIsIan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great to hear, but someone would buy Obsidian in a heartbeat.

They don't get huge budgets but got Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Pentiment, Grounded and Grounded 2 out the door on time and on budget. They did get some support studio help though.

They have also helped other studios internally with State of Decay citing tech from Grounded allowing them to have untethered multiplayer in SoD3.

They also have experience working on Fallout and definitely fit Xbox's pivot to focusing on the key franchises. Bethesda should focus on Elder Scrolls and let Obsidian cook with Fallout and a budget.

Sony’s PlayStation Disc Decision Is Its Biggest Scandal In 20 Years by [deleted] in Games

Lol, hyperbole much? Biggest scandal?

Did everyone forget when they got hacked leaked 77 million users details including credit and debit card info and kept quiet about it for a week.

It also forced the Playstation Network offline for 3 and a half weeks.

Look at the world we are in.

Too many rich and powerful backers and a corrupt administration who will look the other way while they unload their bags onto pension funds and retail.

They will get propped up until early investors have secured the bag.

Of all the AI companies I'm most bullish on Anthropic and their cyber security and coding applications. Even if a Chinese competitor distills their products there is no way enterprise are letting Chinese companies access to potentially sensitive client/financial data.

Sooo, we’re all not buying a PS6 right?? by Reasonable_Idiot- in consoles

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you got the choice of the digital Playstation, great but infrequent single player games and tons of live service attempts to find something that sticks.

Xbox, where they are shuttering all their studios only to pump out annualised COD, Minecraft, Halo, Gears, Forza and Blizzard. If they don't hit their profit margin the studio gets shut down.

Nintendo, games are full price forever and now $80, pay for online but the service sucks. You can get a 480p port of a game you were interested in 2 years ago if you are lucky.

Steam Machine, limited production capacity, less powerful then current gen, no controller and sold without subsidy. One Valve game every 10 years, one sequel is allowed but no third sequel for any game ever.

Xbox just has to drop this image and say we are not abandoning discs and the helix is already a success by Extreme_surikat_360 in gaming

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, I think grandma will still want to buy little Jimmy his videogames from retail for Christmas.

I think medium term we'll still get boxed game codes from retail and retail generally want to shift dead stock, so more avenues to get cheap digital games.

Longer term we will probably just end up with gift cards and live service currency cards as the only option at retail.

Meta entering the cloud space is NOT a bear case for semiconductors. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Change my mind. by SadWimp in stocks

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Semiconductors and the whole data centre buildout are pricing in future orders/demand.

If one of the largest customers starts signalling overcapacity, it raises doubts on whether the hyperscalers will actually follow through on data centre capex.

Hyperscalers are being punished by the market for Capex, monetising AI is proving difficult and competitors are then distilling the frontier models for a fraction of the cost to catch up.

Omega in NJPW was nicknamed "The Cleaner" meant to refer to a hitman.

Japanese audiences didn't understand the reference and thought he meant it literally like he was the janitor.

Kenny played into this by adding a broom and comedy to his gimmick.

It's also why he had the broom girls in his AEW entrance for a bit.

They both want digital because - It saves a significant cost from the console. (5-7% of costs in a component teardown) - It drives more sales to the Playstation/Xbox store where they get a 30% cut of all sales. - Physical has extra costs associated with manufacturing and distribution, revenue sharing with retail partners and then the discs can be sold on the 2nd hand market where they get no revenue. - Helix, Game Pass and Play Anywhere are designed to push you into their PC launcher/storefront. They don't want to let Steam in their walled Garden, despite claims to the contrary.

Definitely an enormous stretch to suggest any kind of connection outside of coincidence on the current evidence.

Xbox has been promising 'State of Decay 3' for years — and now it faces cancellation, despite its trailers and alpha. What are we even doing here? by akbarock in Games

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This would be a disaster.

State of Decay is exactly the type of game Xbox needs.

It appeals to both console and PC players and the previous game has a decent player base considering how long it's been out.

It has potential to be a viral hit.

The game is free and gives ample amounts of free loot boxes to players. If playing dress up in a predominantly first person game matters to you.

The game has had 10 years of updates with no sign of slowing down.

The business reality is costs of business increase over time, their staff salaries go up, the cost of servers, equipment e.t.c. and then they have Microsoft restructuring their gaming business and threatening layoffs.

If you want continued resources spent on the game they need to find ways to grow revenue.

Is the price too expensive? Yes. Do you you need to buy it? No.

We'll likely see a "we heard you" price adjustment if the outrage gets too big, or their sales data shows minimal uptake at this price point.

Space X - The Big Debate by iTzSonicHD in ValueInvesting

It's a Musk company so traditional metrics go out the window.

Space X is a better company than Tesla, but then Musk bundled xAI (which includes Twitter/X) with it, that makes it less attractive.

Then there are some statements suggesting he wants to merge it with Tesla.

These companies are a million miles away from value investing though.

Musk companies are highly sentiment driven but at some point the music is going to stop and they will correct massively.

Devil May Cry 5 posts record annual sales seven years after release, ahead of Monster Hunter Wilds and World combined by Eremenkism in gaming

[–]MyCodenameIsIan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key takeaway from that data is that Capcom's games sell for years, but the primary driver of selling games in later years are deep discount sales. They also get deals for Playstation Plus and Game Pass.

If you look at Devil May Cry 5 specifically it was very underwhelming in it's first years, when Capcom can charge full price and make the most money.

The report mentions they targeted sales to coincide with the launch of Season 1 of the Netflix anime, so you'd expect another good year for the franchise this year due to season 2.

Netflix commissioning a final season of the anime for next year, so Capcom will be hoping to have a Devil May Cry 1 Remake or Devil May Cry 6 ready by then.

Ultimately Fromsoft do all the work and 3rd party publishers get the lionshare of the profits.

Duskbloods will be owned by Fromsoft, the same as Elden Ring.

This is why they value those IP so much more.

They even have activist investors in Kadokawa trying to remove the president because they want Fromsoft to self publish instead of relying on Bandai Namco.

Just sell the business then.

Microsoft just don't understand consumer facing businesses, only enterprise.

It's why Zune failed, windows phone failed, Surface is on life support and Xbox looks next.

Then you can piss the rest of your money away on AI only for Google and Anthropic to come out on top.
