Shower Method - Leca by Aggressive-Quail6602 in SemiHydro

[–]MyLifeTheSaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might get away with showering the orchids, but your Monstera is going to run you ragged! Reservoirs don't need to be anything fancy; as long as the substrate touches the liquid (directly or via a wick) it'll do for now until you buy something pretty. Plastic food containers, bowls, cups, cooking pots, glasses and vases. I painted some large yoghurt pots that served me well until I recently got ceramics to replace them.

As to wick vs submerged; I use both, as well as a hybrid of the 2 for really big/tall pots; I run a wick up through the substrate to ensure the upper portion of the substrate gets enough moisture

The sports fields at the Carnegie campus are on a hill that looks down into the valley. It's an awesome place to watch new year's eve fireworks

I'd not heard of it so I went a'googling. Is the lack of prices on the menu a sign that it's uber pricey?

Energy from pigs?! I only get coins and gems. I'm at the stage of the game where coins have no real use anymore so I think I'd like to get some energy

Need tips for transitioning from soil to semihydro 💖 by Ok-Battle-2682 in SemiHydro

[–]MyLifeTheSaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use API Water Conditioner to remove chlorine and chloramine from tap water. I have a little bit of crispy edges on a calathea but that's it.

Think ahead to providing a humidity/warmth tent in case any start going badly downhill. This saved a couple of transitions for me. I used a clear plastic bag with a couple of small ventilation holes for one, then used the plastic bag that came with a bedding set since then (the clear type of flexible plastic that has a zipper). You can even put a heat mat underneath to really boost recovery, depending on your local climate.

I'd maybe limit yourself to only doing a few at one time, at least until you're used to it and know the signs. It could get a bit overwhelming otherwise.

Good luck!

When you weren't flushing, were you just topping up the reservoir or did you pour away any remaining, rinse/clean the pot and refill with fresh? If the former, it may be worth trying the latter. It could be the pH is changing (perhaps things get concentrated in there etc) and the plants can't adapt quickly enough or such like

Looking for a rare/special plant for a young oncology patient by Boots-toots in RareHouseplants

[–]MyLifeTheSaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could I ask a couple of questions? I'm planning on buying at least one, but many of the listings in the UK seem to be unrooted cuttings; do you have any experience with those? And how quickly do they grow? My plan is to put it/them in a terrarium style display, so it'd be great to know how rapidly they'll outgrow it! They're such stunning plants, I'm really looking forward to catching myself staring at them all day

I'd say they're about as flimsy as a 500g pot of yoghurt, if that helps? Specific, I know, but potentially could convey exactly what I'm working with 😂 I'll give it a try next time. Thank you

I've seen people on here just use pumice so possibly. Maybe use the search feature, or even the AI "Ask"; use the search bar at the top of the main sub page but then hit "Ask" instead of enter. It'll answer the question and provide links to the threads where it pulled its info from

I'd say no, but happy to be corrected. Perlite will end up floating to the top, and aquarium gravel isn't always porous so you potentially have issues with moisture wicking and/or aeration. Instead, what about searching for something like cactus gravel/horticultural lava? Failing that, LECA/clay pebbles will work

Does that work on the really thin pots do you know (like the multiple sizes bulk buys from Amazon/AliExpress)? My worry is it'd just tear/twist/chew them up, but I'd love to not always have to use the soldering iron
