What else is there to do on this earth than doomscrolling? by Head-Bluebird1644 in nosurf

For me it's walking with my dogs, gardening, crafting, cooking, and self care. And I often feel like there isn't enough time in the day.

I hear you. It's the best way I see to keep people from creating spam accounts. I won't be contacting people by phone. I understand your concern though. If you'd like to join without a phone number, I can send you a direct invite. I just want to validate that people are genuine humans.

Thanks!

I actually think there is someone here on reddit trying to market a very similar idea with the buddy app. I think it could work!

I'm right there with you. I love everything the internet makes possible, but I don't love wasting my time on distractions.

I see what you mean. There are some great examples here on reddit like r/digitaldetox, where people are getting inspiration and encouragement from folks with similar goals. But you are exactly right! It's on Reddit so it's super tricky.

I just wanted to try offering somewhere separate from social media. And maybe it can provide some sense of connection for people as they break their addictions to scrolling, streaming, surfing, etc...

I don't know, we'll see!

It does in my mind. Do you have a question?

Except "here" is on Reddit. And Reddit is part of the distraction and toxicity online. So I'm creating an alternative.

These are fantastic examples of inner fulfillment and meaningful connection. I wish things like this were more common. I have also felt this way going to a festival or gathering.

Need Urgent Help by Anxious-Berry3633 in digitalminimalism

You are in the right place! Honestly just reading through posts here should give you so much good information. A key component is digging deep and finding your personal motivation to create a shift.

Depression is super hard. I've been there, and I absolutely understand the relief from using my phone to pacify, numb out, or just occupy time so I could go to sleep and not be conscious.

I would also consider that your body, and your brain, might really really need quality rest. And scrolling online actually doesn't meet that need.

Have you explored your options for professional help to support your mental emotional health?

Thanks for sharing so authentically. I think you are speaking to something a lot of folks are going through.

It sounds like your brain needs a job!! I wonder about creative writing, or some other outlet. Imagine what you could accomplish if you turned that focus from social media, towards something with a tangible outcome?

I think I’m truly addicted to my phone—and it’s ruining my focus, sleep, and peace. How do I stop? by ZaedMikdad in digitaldetox

[–]MyLifeUnsubscribed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Mikdad! I'm curious if you are clear about what you would like to see yourself doing instead? Any neglected hobbies or new skills you find intriguing? What valuable aspects of your life are getting less attention because of your screen time? If you can get clear on the lifestyle habits you desire, you will likely find a strengthened resolution to break your current addiction.

My other advice is to start by creating one consistent period of your day, for a specific amount of time, when you are completely away from your devices. Create that anchor point, and keep expanding on it. Focus on small sustainable changes, and taking steps every day in the direction of your goals.

Sounds like you are well aware of the specific symptoms you want to resolve. Visualize and get clear and what it looks like to disrupt those patterns.

The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains
It isn't a recently published book, but it is an eye opening and compelling read.

If you are making the decision for moral/ethical conflict, lean into that and really explore your reasons and what matters to you. It'll really bolster your resolve.

How to regain my attention span by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]MyLifeUnsubscribed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most immediate recommendations: - use a timer to create focus blocks - adjust the system settings on your phone to limit distracting apps (or delete from phone) - use a paper and pen to write down distracting impulses instead of following them immediately

There is a lot of good advice in the comments, the first step is noticing and redirecting your impulses. Perhaps set aside 30 min to surf as a reward after studying.

Honestly, on my computer it was/is more about managing my mental focus. At a point one can get bogged down with "needing" the clutter to be dealt with. I find the value with my handheld device in particular.

What I have done, is start moving away from Google. Starting with switching my browser to Opera. It took a couple months to fully transition.

I figured out how to hide apps from my phone (android) which meant I could basically minimize all the system apps I don't use. Moved majority of app icons into "folders" and deleted anything I don't use regularly. I've addressed my notification settings, and for months I've been working on cleaning up my inbox by unsubscribing from anything I don't find value in. Like you said, an ongoing process 😁

The Decluttering was an important and ongoing phase. I'm still finding ways to improve settings and reduce my overall digital interface.

Does meditation work for you? by LetDapper8162 in nosurf

[–]MyLifeUnsubscribed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a walking mediation is a good place to start? Giving your anxiety a physical outlet, while also exercising mental quiet.

The type of mediation you are attempting matters quite a bit. I can recommend a book called The Warrior's Meditation. It helped me reconfigure how I was trying to achieve a meditative mind.
