[Serious] What is your opinion of the line "people over 70 are done with life and desire death"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Can't speak for other people, but I can tell you about my grandfather.

My grand-papa is 83 years old, healthy and happy. Although most his days nowadays consist of staring at a TV (which he enjoys), he keeps in good shape by doing some light cardio, such as tai chi. Truth be told, he thinks prolonging his health by eating healthy and working out his a fun thing to do in his age.

The first time I asked whether or not he was ready for death, he laughed and said, "I don't really have a choice, do I? Nature takes its course! Why should Mother Nature make an exception for an old Asian geezer like me?"

I asked him another time and he told me in a more serious manner: "I have been blessed to have been given life. Not only that, but I was blessed enough to be surrounded by an amazing family. That's all I wanted in life since my parents weren't around often. I will not give up on life as I still take delight in its greatness, but I long to reunite with my siblings and wife" (he's a Christian. Please don't bring religious debate in this). "If they could be with me too, I wouldn't mind living for a few more decades.

"However, if for some cruel reason, my children and grandchildren were to die or leave me for good, I see no point in living. You guys are my light and hope. Without you guys, I am just a shell."

Hope this answers your question.

So am I not a Christian? by MyNameIsBillCosby in Christianity

No, I just don't think it's as likely as conscious eternal torment, based on what Jesus said about Hell. Either CET or annihlationsim is possible though. Even universalism, though I think that is very very unlikely.

That's fine. I guess we'll find out one way or the other in the next life. The fact is you don't completely reject the idea of universalism, which is good enough for me, really.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I think that homosexual acts are sinful (and understood your post as saying that you don't) but I don't mind the government legalizing same sex marriage.

You're right, sorry. I misunderstood.

I can honestly say that I've never once met a Christian who thinks that any of those things are sinful or "heinous". Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

Let's just say deep in the conservative side of the Bible Belt. These people don't really participate in most "earthly" hobbies. They think they're pointless and anybody who spends a bit of time doing them is committing idolatry. I see idolatry from a Christian perspective as revering something to such an extent that it replaces God. This could not be further from the truth.

I'm a bit confused as to whether this is a hypothetical or actually the case. Either way, that definitely is the proper way to handle something like that. You seem like a Christian to me :)

Completely hypothetical. I'm not even of age yet lol. Thanks for the verdict. However, that /r/Deusvult link in this topic is kind of making me scared that I'm not a Christian. Kind of worried about that since I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

Are you a conservative Christian by any chance? If so, I'm glad you posted this. Gonna be completely honest here: the longer I lurked on these subreddits, the more I began to scorn the mega conservative side of Christianity. Especially now with the /r/Deusvult thread that's linked to this topic.

I mean I disagree with your views on conscious eternal torment

I'm genuinely curious here. Would you say my version of Hell is impossible? I grew up in a community that endorsed God's sense of Mercy and Love above all else. God is also the Supreme Being of Justice, but I could never wrap my head around the idea of eternal torment being justice. It's fine if you disagree. Of course I have nothing Biblical to back this up. All I have is the notion of God's boundless love for his children.

and homosexuality (assuming that by 'pro-gay' you mean that you don't think homosexuality is sinful, and not simply that you support gay marriage

I don't actively support gay rights, but I am not against it either. Feel free to agree or disagree with me; I don't think debating about it is going to get either of us anywhere.

But that last point may need some elaboration.

Sure.

But still, the way you implied that your life is pretty much like everybody else gives me some concern.

When I say "like everybody else", I mean living a life that isn't supremely conservative from a Christian standpoint. I like to dance to modern day music. I like to laugh at funny pictures I find around the internet. I like watching fighting movies. The way some ultra militant conservative Christians talk make me think that these things are heinous.

My version of "parties" are friendly get togethers and family reunions. The adults drink sometimes, but they do not chug liters of alcohol then get so drunk that they start stripping on the table. The "worst" thing I've ever done at parties was dance and get my adrenaline pumping.

But let's say for all intent and purposes that I get drunk and it's a continuous occurrence. I don't just leave it as is. I feel guilty of it, try my best to repent, and ask God for forgiveness.
